Demonstration in Addu calls for Salah's body to be handed over to family for burial

27 April 2007

Addu - More than a 1000 people are demonstrating in Addu in solidarity with Hussain Salah's family, who have been staging a vigil outside the Atoll Office since yesterday, as the Dictator has refused to hand over the body of Salah to the family, as requested. Salah's body is due to be flown to Maldives by the regime tonight and tension is high both in the capital Male' and in Addu.

Local TV is reporting that the body is being brought to Male' as per the wishes of the family but the family has totally denied this, saying "we have made our request in writing, which is to hand over the body to us so that we could bury him in Sri Lanka," said a family source. Earlier, the family wanted to bury Salah in Addu but developments over the last few days made them change their mind, after the regime played foul with his post-mortem, carried out in Colombo this week.

The demonstration which began this afternoon is set to continue late into the night. Salah's body is expected to arrive in the Maldives just after midnight tonight.
