Election News in Brief
Gaafu Alif candidate Jabir violates election laws over and over
Ga. Dhaandhoo Camp - Following documents from Ga Atoll candidate Jabir proves that he is violating election laws by making payments to individuals and associations in the Atoll in return for their support.
These reported are a clear indication of the extent of corruption in the campaigns of pro-government candidates. Mr. Jabir is a 'boy' of Gayyoom's brother Yameen and has access to STO funds. Most locals in Male' know that he is just an acting man managing businesses for Yameen. When Yameen talks about electing educated and capable people to the parliament like himself, what is making him support people like Jabir who did not even go through formal education.
If the Election Commissioner is true to his principles and law abiding, he must now suspend both Yameen and Jabir based on the evidences in the public domain. However, many know that Rashad is a puppet of Gayyoom and will not be able to do anything to upset the regime. What Rashad does not realise is that he is not only answerable to Gayyoom but also to Allah. Rashad is seen as a pious man on the outset but it is now possible to draw out the conclusion that Rashad fear no one but Gayyoom and just like the other crooks in the government, he also wants to remain in power. It is not time to prove that he is a man of principle. He must take action or he will have to take the responsibility of every injustice in the country.

Opinion
What Constitutes a FREE and FAIR Election?

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his family members favoured by the wealthy or big business with enormous funds, are being used to influence voter opinion through the control of Atoll Chiefs and Island Chiefs, complete control of local media. Government candidates can abuse the law and bend rules as they wish, they can use government funds and logistics to get elected. And, if they are a member of Gayyoom's family, they can even kill someone who opposes them and nothing can be done about it. read more

Election News in Brief

Hiyalee resorting to desperate measure to disrupt Aslams campaign activities

Addu - More than 800 people attended a special buffet organised by Aslam's supporters in Hulhudhoo Island yesterday evening. However, one of Aslam's supporters paid a high price for participating in this event. Multi Jamal, a prominent businessman gave his 95 feet fishing dhoni (boat) to be used for transferring people from main land (Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Feydhoo) to Hulhudhoo island. This turned out to be a very high price as the vessel is now confiscated by Police on the orders of Hiyalee.

Despite several attempts to ease tension with the officials of the island of Hulhudhoo, they were against this event including the Atoll Chief as reported earlier. As a final blow, the Island Chief of Hulhudhoo Mohamed Jameel and Assistant Atoll Chief Haleem called Hiyalee and asked him to report this use of a fishing dhoni (boat) for passenger transfer. Police immediately got involved and this 95 feet, top of the range fishing vessel worth more than 5 million Rufiyaa is now confiscated until further investigation which will result in heavy loss to the owner. It is estimated that each day the vessel does not operate the potential revenue loss from fish catch could be anything up to 50,000 Rufiyaa as a minimum.

Police has reported told the owners that as there is a case lodged against the vessel, it is their duty to investigate. Reformists are however unable to lodge cases against government crooks like Hiyalee because instead of investigating the case, those who report the case will be arrested. Gayyoom's justice is blind in on eye.

Mallaa Lhathuthu to coordinate (vilares) Addu Elections

Some of the very senior officials from government has left to Fuah Mulaku and Addu Atoll to organise voting arrangements. Malla lhathuthu (ph 772578) is one of the official and he will be arranging Addu Atoll votes. Malla is trying very hard to become a cabinet minister and according to sources in the government, he is going to make or break this time. Malla's PhD is apparently in harbour management and dredging.

Election News in Brief

"I am not answerable to Maumoon, who is he? I am answerable to Abdulla Hameed only" says Addu Atoll Chief

Addu front runner Aslam's supporters have opened up a new office in Hulhudhoo island and hundreds of people are visiting the island and working with the team to muster support for the pro-democracy candidate. However, it is believed that possible disturbances are planned by Yameen and Hameeds' boy Hiyalee, who is also running for Addu Atoll. Addu Paateys (Heroine Addicts and Criminal Elements developed by Adam Zahir, Police Commissioner and Yameen - Gayyoom's Brother) are already on the loose under the command of Hiyalee to disturb the peace in the Atoll.

Aslam's supporters today met with Addu Atoll Chief Mr. Azeez and requested him to safeguard them and prevent any unrest. He laughed and replied "What election campaign, this is nothing. We are campaigning everyday for something!" and the supporters reminded him that President Maumoon wants a free and fair election, to which the Atoll Chief Replied "I don't care, I am not answerable to Maumoom, who is he? I am answerable to Abdulla Hameed only!". The chief failed to even acknowledge there is a potential problem and a lot of hype about the election in the Atoll.

Maldives Government Reveals All

Yameen's Speech Translated
Election speech given by Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Minister for Trade, Maldives. The speech was given in Miladhoo Island, Noonu Atoll, on the 16th December 2004. The speech was translated into English by Minivan News.
"Europe is a continent that has many countries that do a lot of things for Maldives. The parliaments of very many countries in Europe - the European Parliament - passed against the Maldives very strict very unjust and very ill-mannered resolutions. However those countries will begin acting upon it by themselves, in what is called Europe every country is independent, but European Parliament includes the parliaments of all those countries, the dangerous matters passed we shall have to change. Some affairs have been destroyed by certain people! However those have to be rectified! This is maybe why our work became heavier, for this reason." read more

Election News in Brief
Addu Katheebs are breaking the law but Addu Hero is still leading the poll by a huge margin
Despite the acts of Paatey's - the drug addicts - who were recently released from jail and came to Addu have conducted a mass sabotage campaign against pro-reformists and the favourite to win the election, Aslam, the authrorities in Addu, especially the Katheebs have not done anything about it.
Reports say that all of Aslam and Shareef's posters have now been torn apart including the large canvass boards.
In addition to that, the Katheeb's are threatening people not to even play Aslam's campaign song and warning them of imminent arrest.
Gayyoom's government is apparently using all means possible to muster support for their candidates. This even included school teachers and senior staff of the health sector.
Despite these unethical and illicit activities by the government staff and criminal elements in Addu, Aslam is still leading the poll by a huge margin. read more about Aslam's campaingn and listen to the song

Dhiraagu Staff in Hithadhoo force to vote for Hiyalee Rasheed
Hithadhoo - Sources from Dhiraagu Office in Hithadhoo say that one of the senior staff, Head of Accounting, Mr. Mohamed Rasheed Majudee has warned his staff that if they do not vote for Hiyalee Rasheed then they are likely to loose their jobs. As reported earlier, STO staff are already on probation, especially those who are openly campaigning and supporting Aslam and Shareef for the Addu seats.
Hiyalee has told his friends that if he does not get the highest vote and come out as the clear winner for Addu, especially Hithadhoo Island, he will walk naked in Majeedhee Magu in the capital Male'.
Despite rumours that he will be transferred to Trade Ministry, it has now been revealed that Hiyalee will in fact be transferred to MWSC, the Maldives Water Company.

Election News in Brief
Ga Villingili people are steadfast in their challenge to remove the Atoll Chief
Villingili - Abdulla Hameed stopped by Villigilli recently during his tour of islands after the tsunami disaster. This brief stopover was mainly to deal with the rising tension in the island and the kicking out of the Atoll Chief Abdul Rahman from the island last week.
The people of Villingili did not allow Katheebs of the island to escort Hameed but they themselves too Hameed to show him the damaged area.
The conflict with the Atoll Chief was mainly as a result of giving false information to the local media stating that the island did not suffer from the tsunami, when this was the worst affected island in the Huvadhu Atoll.
Hameed is very upset because the Atoll Chief Abdul Rahman is no longer accepted by the people and wants to re-instate him to the job. Abdul Rahman is also one of the many lovers of Gayyoom's brother Hameed, the Minister for Atolls Administration.
Deputy Minister for Atolls, Sheereen who is contesting in the upcoming parliamentary election is also very upset about the whole episode because she also got a lot of stick from the people of the island and most importantly, the Atoll Chief was her campaign manager.
Government 'blessed' candidates, Sheereen and Jabir are extremely unpopular in the Atoll are unlikely to win the seats, according to the

 sentiments in these island.

Local News in Brief
Addu Atoll STO operations marred in corruption & Hiyalee will be sacked soon

Hithadhoo - Hiyalee Rasheed, incumbent Member of Parliament trying hard for his re-election is seen as more powerful than the Managing Director of State Trading Organization Plc (STO). This is because of his 'unusually' close relationship with Gayyoom's brother Yameen, the Trade Minister, who was the Chairman of STO until recently. STO's funds is being used by Hiyalee for his campaign in Addu Atoll and more than 1.5 million Rufiyaa has gone missing according to reliable sources in Hithadhoo. Manager of STO in Addu, Mohamed Rasheed, Mohoreege, Feydhoo Island, has now been suspended and is to be transferred to a new STO location or will be used as a scapegoat for Hiyalee's misdemeanours and corruption. For his bravery and dynamism in trying to prolong the reign of terror in Maldives from the Gayyoomists, Hiyalee will be transferred to Trade Ministry shortly after the elections.
Hiyalee campaign is breaking apart and many are disgusted with the extent of abuse of power by the government candidate, such as the eviction of Mirage group from the shop, which is being used as an example of what will happen if government candidates are not elected for Addu.
Hiyalee should be careful not to end up in jail because Gayyoom can't afford his rats to be nasty at the moment whilst the international media is so focused on him and he wants billions of dollars to go into his personal accounts in the name of reconstruction, rebuilding and relief, nicknamed 'The Vilares Project'.

Maldives Parliamentary Election delayed until 22nd January 2005

The parliamentary election which was scheduled for 31st December 2004 has been rescheduled for 22nd January 2004 according to Election Commissions Office. As previously speculated by DO, the country is not in a state to hold election because of the relief operation. It remains to be seen whether the country can return to normalcy by this date. This will perhaps bring an end to the unethical activities by parliamentary candidates endorsed by Gayyoom from taking advantage of the needy by labelling aid and food package with their name. Such behaviour has been witnessed in Noon Atoll (Yameen Abdul Gayyoom - the powerful brother), Vaavu Atoll (Abdulla Shiahd - Gayyoom's secretary), Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (Abbas Ibrahim - brother in law of Gayyoom) and in Haa Alif by Samarubluloo Ibrahim Manik - brother in law of Gayyoom). These people are obviously above the law.

Aslam leading the polls in Addu says fans

Despite harassment and intimidation by government Aslam's supporters are confident of a landslide victory for their candidate.

Addu women also have opened an office to support Aslam. Aslam's supporters have offices in each island and in Male' as well. On 24th, Aslam came to Male' to meet with his many supporters in who live in Male' and work in nearby resort island.

Some resort owners like DIMMS Salih and Universal group are forcing the Addu staff to vote for the Dr. Mustafa Luthfy, the Tourism Minister because they want favour from him. This is a general trend in amongst corrupt businessmen in the Maldives who appease this government for their own benefit. The popular view however is that despite pressure from the owners, Addu workers are overwhelmingly in support of Aslam and Shareef, because they are the most democratic and honest people who Addu people believe can deliver them a better life.

On popular demand by Addu readers of Dhivehi Observer, we are happy to dedicate this page for Aslam's supporters. Listen to Aslam's song and view campaign album

Vote rigging Gayyoom-style

The main times when fraud is scheduled to occur, are:
Transportation of ballot boxes by air or the NSS coast guard

The recent exposure by Shuaib of the faulty hinge pins fitted to the ballot boxes gives an indication of Gayyoom's blatant rigging methods. Ballots already prepared in Male' are used by Gayyoom to replace islanders' votes. The faulty lock makes it easy.
Storage area in Male'
The Commissioner had stated that in Male' the ballot boxes' storage area cannot be accessed and they are sealed with tamper-evident tape. This will be the perfect opportunity to interfere with the votes because the boxes from both Male' and the atolls will be placed there. Commonwealth to send Expert Team, not Observer Group, to Maldives Elections
Minivan news
We at the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative are greatly concerned about the state of democracy and human rights in the Maldives. As a member of the Commonwealth, the Maldives is committed to abiding by the Harare Principles, which includes respect for human rights and the rule of law, as well as providing democratic governance to its people. Unfortunately, for some time the Maldives has failed to do so.

Niumath for Huvadhu Atoll

Born to parents from Huvadhoo Atoll (Late Ibrahim Moosa from Kolamaafushi) and Aishath Didi from Thinadhoo), Niumath Shafeeq brings to the Atoll much needed experience and a new frontier of prosperity, education, experience and youth.
With over 20 years in the education sector, Niumath is known for her hard work, efficiency and leadership. Indeed, she has earned the respect and appreciation of her peers at work.

Niumath is the elder sister of DO Chief Editor Sappe'. Her husband Hussain Rasheed was one of the 5 reformist whose detention prompted the Black Friday demonstration. Hussain Rasheed was in solitary confinement without charge for 77 days. The injustices she experienced prompted her to make a contribution to the society by becoming a representative of the people. She is stunned at the extent of corruption as well as the efforts of this government to undermine the democratic rights of the people. read more

Mohamed Shihab is more qualified and capable to be the President of Maldives than Gayyoom
If public opinion is anything to go by, Mohamed Shihab is set to win a landslide majority in the the upcoming parliamentary elections. He is standing for Male' seat and the public are certain to accord him the honour of representing them in the parliament. However, a wild smear campaign has been launched by the government candidates against Shihab with the blessings of Gayyoom, in order to tarnish Shihab's image. Nevertheless, these efforts are seen by the great majority of Male' people as shear desperation by Gayyoom to cling on to power. read more

How should the vote be counted in 'free and fair' elections?
If Gayyoom was true to his word and wants to conduct a fair election, he should put in place proper mechanisms and transparent measures in counting the votes and announcing the results. However, he is turning a deaf year to the call for such measures, including counting votes in islands rather than ballot boxes being transported to Male' for counting. This is one of the many reasons why no one believes that Gayyoom intends to let the people of Maldives decide their own fate; his will is above all aspirations of the people and is the law of the land. He intends to carry on with his oppressive rule by using the parliament as a rubber stamp institute which makes his rule 'look' legitimate. read more

Samarey campaign in Haa Alif gets tough
Samarubuloo Ibrahim Manik (Samarey) is campaigning hard to retain his seat in the parliament. Unlike other candidates, he has complete access to government funds and public buildings. He is believed to be mixing his ministerial powers with that of a candidate for the parliamentary seat.

Reports also confirm that he has told all the island chiefs that unless he is the no.1 winner of the two seats, there will be repercussions for the atoll and loss of government aid.

As Youth and Sports Minister, brother-in-law of Gayyoom and media controller, Samarey commands lot of influence in the country.

Women of the island are also wary about his presence in the atoll.

According to public opinion, Samarey will come last in this election but they are very sceptical that their democratic rights will not be recognised and the votes will be rigged. The campaign is just an act, they know that people like Samarey will be in the parliament because results will be twisted in their favour. The people will not yield easily this year and will demand the votes to be counted in the islands and not taken to Male' for counting. If Gayyoom wants this election to be free and fair, what is stopping him from arranging the votes to be counted on the atolls in respective islands.

Forced sex with young girls during Ilyas Ibrahim's island tours

ilyas ibrahim - small

Ilyas doesn't like people who say no to him, at any time. He sends people to jail if they don't comply with his requests, and wicked torture is done to prisoners in these jails. If Gayyoom and Ilyas have managed to commit horrific torture on prisoners this year with all the international attention and observers, then it is chilling to think what used to happen when Maldivian news and jails were ignored by the outside world.

Abdul Azeez Yousuf withdraws from Noonu Atoll race

Mr. Azeez, deputy Home minister and former ambassador to Sri Lanka and India, who was contesting for a seat in Noonu atoll has withdrawn from the race giving reason as 'too much pressure'. Mr. and Mrs Azeez are currently is Singapore and are expected to return to Maldives only after the elections.

DO received information that his resignation is due to a combination of pressure and few thousand dollars paid to him by Yameen and his supporters.
Gayyoom's brother Yameen likes to get elected by default after pressuring other candidates to withdraw their candidacy, as was the case when Yameen won by default in 1999.

Island chiefs and other officials are threatening the public in the Noonu electorate, saying unless Yameen is elected as the no.1 candidate, the whole atoll will suffer a lot because government funding will be cut off and the atoll will be financially neglected.

Mohamed Nasheed of H. Fohdhooge withdraws from Male' race and backs Maldivian Democratic Party
Nasheed issued the following statement regarding the withdrawal of his candidacy.
'In view of the fact that the Maldivian Democratic Party has endorsed Ibrahim Ismail MP and Mohamed Shihab MP as candidates for both seats of Male' in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, and given that the decision to endorse the candidates followed agreement among the MDP's fifteen member council, which was elected by party members in February 2004 to direct policy of the party, I feel that I as a person who respects the decisions of the party should also endorse the party candidates and therefore have decided to withdraw my name from the candidacy list for the Male' seat.
I further thank all my supporters for the valuable work done for my campaign and urge them to also back the candidates supported by the MDP.' The statement was made public on Minivan News yesterday.

Dhivehi reports tell of government intimidation and NSS assaults during election campaign
Reports in Dhivehi published by this website tell of increasing efforts by Gayyoom to control voters in the atolls and Male'.
Food is being cut to MDP supporters in Addu, and the party's workers have received death threats in Feydhoo island, 200 metres north of the NSS southern command headquarters at Gan in Addu atoll. People campaigning for Hithadhoo's Mohamed Aslam are being threatened with arrest after the election.
Ibrahim Luthfee, editor of the influential Sandhaanu newsletter, is urging Addu people in his newsletter and on Minivan radio, not to vote for his uncles Hiyalee and Musthafa in the majlis elections on 31 December.

Meanwhile a Thinadhoo island family from Huvadhu atoll, renting in Male', claim they were raided by seven NSS officers led by Abdullah Riyaz who stormed into the house at 15 mins past midnight when the family was asleep. The NSS said they were searching for a mobile phone microchip that they claimed was used in the house to send phoned threats to high government officials.
While three men from the family were held at the police station, women were stripped naked at the house and searched between the legs. No microchip was found, but the NSS stole US$100 in cash from a bedroom drawer.
When Abdullah Riyaz was asked to justify the NSS actions, he replied that President Gayyoom is the law and the NSS is not going to allow people the opportunity to hide things.

Powerful brother of Gayyoom, Atolls minister Abdullah Hameed

Gay times ending for Abdulla Hameed
The Atolls ministry may be an outdated place, but Hameed never lets a corrupt opportunity slip by. His Cartier watch is worth more than US$50,000.
The major work of the ministry, apart from vote rigging and the 'Gayoom Katheeb Development Programme', is the serious business of buying equipment for the islands. These bids are subjected to gleeful corruption by the Hameed favourites and they collect commissions on cars, buses, and water tanks etc.

Maybe Hameed's name will be remembered in the Dhivehi history books, or rather in the Dhivehi dictionary, as the person responsible for the word: meenaazukulhi (named after his house Meenaaz.)

Ahmed Abdulla gives Mrf 40,000/- to H Dh Atoll youth to buy a sound system

Confirmed sources reports that Ahmed Abdulla, the Minister of Information is trying to buy his way into the parliament. Like all other ministers and government candidates, Ahmed Abdulla also asked his constituents if they needed anything. The youth said that they needed a sound system and without any hesitation, Mr. Abdulla gave them Mrf 40,000/- in cash to buy the system they wanted.

Ahmed Abdaulla is also meeting with people from the Atoll in his house in Male' almost every night and asking them if they needed anything and is mostly paying them cash.

Unlike before, in this election, it is believed that people will not sell their future for a few hundred bucks.

It is completely against the rules and regulations as well as the governing election laws to bribe or pay constituents cash in order to secure their votes. However, since it is the government candidates who are committing this crime, there is no way to bring them to justice.

The front runners in H Dh Atoll are the popular and much respected reformists, Ahmed Adhil and Shuaib Ali (Furahani).

Yameen ships bribes to Addu
Two cars and four motorcycles are being sent to southern Maldives by Minister of Trade Yameen as bribes for Hiyalee's floundering election campaign in Addu.
'A car holds five adults comfortably, and a motorcycle transports two people easily,' explained a DO source. 'So that's 18 votes Hiyalee can count on. I guess that's better than none.'

Hussein Manik Dhon Manik has stress attack
Thaa atoll majlis member (and intimate friend of Gayyoom's brother Abdullah Hameed) Hussein Manik Dhon Manik travelled to Trivandrum to consult a psychiatrist, Dr Justin, when fear of losing his seat in the coming election reached crisis proportions. He wants Dr Justin to stay with him in Maldives as a visiting state dignitary until the election is over.

'This will increase the psychiatrists in Maldives by 100%,' a Maldivian commentator told DO this morning. 'However, it runs the risk of disturbing the fureytha,' he said. 'Many Maldivians believe mental illness is best treated by fanditha. Besides, a bit of paranoid schizophrenia won't do you any harm if you're working for Gayyoom and Hameed.'

Some government staff given leave to campaign for their bosses

While the reformist and anti-Gayyoom candidates are struggling with lack of financial and human resources to make a greater impact in the upcoming election, Gayyoom has authorised his 'blessed' members, including cabinet ministers, to use whatever means necessary to secure seats in the upcoming elections. Many government staff are now on special leave, travelling to different locations in Maldives and campaigning hard for their bosses. In addition to this, government candidates are also given unlimited access to the state owned media in Maldives.

This upcoming election will be anything but fair.

Abdulla Kamaaluddeen begins a smear campaign against Mohamed Shihab

AK supporters have been spotted dropping anti-Shihab leaflets on the streets of Male' in the dark of the night. AK is believed to be extremely upset because he is facing really tough opposition this time and he has lost elections before, as in 1999.

Unofficial polls in Male' show Shihab and Ibra ahead with a clear majority. Most people in Male' were under siege in August and September this year after the proclamation of the state of emergency on 13 August. AK is one of the key cabinet ministers who sent the thugs to the Republican Square and the whole of Male' knows about this. AK cannot win this seat but he can steal it with the help of his god Gayyoom.

Addu's popular candidate Aslam returning home to launch his campaign

Mr. Mohamed Aslam is returning to Addu today after a brief visit to Male'. Aslam will be launching his campaign this week and is already a long way ahead of all the others according to independent polls.

As Principal of Addu Comprehensive School, he has earned the respect of the great majority of the people in the Atoll. A popular democrat, Aslam is one of the new breed of politicians that is expected to carry through the democratic reforms that the country needs so desperately. DO wish him all the best and will continue to support his campaign.
