Dedicated to Evan Naseem
Please wear black in remembrance of Evan Naseem on the
19th of September
19th of
September 2003 was a depressing day for Maldivians. It
was the day Maumoon and his NSS force brutally murdered
one of our brothers, Evan Naseem. This inhuman act was
purely carried out by Maumoon’s NSS force because one
night the officers were bored, had nothing to do, so why
not torture an inmate to pass time? After all who cares
the inmates are there for NSS officers to do whatever
they feel fit.

Terrorising the People: The Secret to Gayyoom's Staying Power
By
denying the atrocities, Gayyoom is demonstrating
that he is part of it, as well as lying to the people,
flouting international treaties, and exposing himself to
the whole world as a desperate dictator trying to cling
on to power by terrorising his own people. The
international community must not give this man any more
time; instead they must continue to mount the pressure.

"An
Overview of European Parliament" Gayyoom's media reports
that European Parliament is a useless bunch of
Christians trying to dominate the Islamic World
The European Parliament plays a central role in
appointing the Commission. It ratifies the appointment
of the Commission President, holds confirmation hearings
of the nominee Commissioners and then decides whether or
not to appoint the Commission, as a whole, by a vote of
confidence.
Parliament also has the right to censure the Commission:
a 'motion of censure' against the Commission adopted by
an absolute majority of MEPs and two-thirds of the votes
cast would force the Commission to resign. To date
Parliament has never adopted a motion of censure, but
its power to do so acts as a powerful deterrent.

Asif arrested today
Pro-reform
activists Ismail Asif has been arrested today in an
attempt to crush the morale of the public and intimidate
the pro-democracy activities in the Maldives. Mr. Asif
is known for holding a public debate on Constitutional
Reform and more famously for his "Dictator Birthday
Party" in July, which angered the regime very much. It
is believed that more arrests are imminent and despite
mounting international pressure Gayyoom remains
relentless and true to his character.

Asif's
Birthday brings Gayyoom to full alert
As
ever, I had an invitation to this party. Mr. Ismail Asif
got permission from Jamaaluddeen School and hired the
hall for his 33rd Birthday Party. I was later told that
it was not even his Birthday but he just felt like
celebrating the day a little bit early. Similar to Nov
3rd being Victory Day in Maldives because Gayyoom felt
like it in spite of that day being the darkest day of
Maldives in living memory.
Initially there was some problem at the gate of the
school. Some senior staff came out and said that they
could not give the hall because Mr. Abdulla Solih, Asst.
Director General at the Ministry of Education has
ordered them that this party should not be allowed to go
on. However, since there invitees were already at the
gate, after some negotiations, everyone went in.

Maldives Pledges Reforms after EU Aid Threat
The Maldives, stung by criticism of a degrading human
rights record, assured the EU today that it was taking
steps to lift a state of emergency and to introduce
democratic reforms.
The government said it "remains wholly and totally
committed to the process of democratic and
constitutional reform" and is hopeful that it will be in
a position to lift the state of emergency "in a matter
of weeks."

The EU motion is the best thing to
happen to ordinary Maldivians, who want to escape the
rampant corruption and brutality of Gayyoom's regime.
Finally, an influential external body with economic
muscle is on their side. As if to add the general mood,
Gayyoom and his family have reportedly flown out of the
country. Many people will hope that they have seen the
back of the dictator for good, but that may be too much

Gayyoom's propaganda takes a gross and ugly turn
Maldivian TV has been showing isolated incidents
of police violence in European countries and
claming that EU and the British are hypocrites
and that they are the true human rights abusers

manipulated to convey a similar message. Gayyoom
is indeed getting desperate and seems to have no

EU
legislators seek to suspend aid to "hell-hole" Maldives
European Union parliamentarians have demanded a halt to non-essential
aid to the Maldives and branded the South Asian tourist spot a
"hell-hole" for locals since the declaration of emergency rule, a
statement said Wednesday.
The European Parliament unanimously passed a resolution this week
calling for the suspension of parts of a two-million-euro aid package
and a EU entry ban for Maldives government members, said the statement
released by the EU mission here.
"After a month of terror on the Maldives, the EU should not hesitate in
blocking any further payment of non-essential elements of the two
million euro aid budget to these islands," the statement said.

How well do we know
Foreign Minister Fathulla Jameel?
Not much. He is quite foreign to most
Maldivians as his portfolio indicates, because he has never been
assigned a post that required him to relate with the average Maldivian
at any point of time during the last three decades.
For most people, Foreign Minister Jameel is known as the longest-serving
foreign minister in the world and the most influential and closest ally
of President Gayyoom. Among the diplomatic community worldwide, he is
most renowned for his outrageous jokes for every occasion, though most
of them in very poor taste. This is a tactic he uses to conceal his lack
of substance or charisma required for such an important job.
