Dedicated to Evan Naseem

Please wear black in remembrance of Evan Naseem on the 19th of September

19th of September 2003 was a depressing day for Maldivians. It was the day Maumoon and his NSS force brutally murdered one of our brothers, Evan Naseem. This inhuman act was purely carried out by Maumoon’s NSS force because one night the officers were bored, had nothing to do, so why not torture an inmate to pass time? After all who cares the inmates are there for NSS officers to do whatever they feel fit. read more

Terrorising the People: The Secret to Gayyoom's Staying Power

By denying the atrocities, Gayyoom is demonstrating that he is part of it, as well as lying to the people, flouting international treaties, and exposing himself to the whole world as a desperate dictator trying to cling on to power by terrorising his own people. The international community must not give this man any more time; instead they must continue to mount the pressure. read more

"An Overview of European Parliament" Gayyoom's media reports that European Parliament is a useless bunch of Christians trying to dominate the Islamic World

The European Parliament plays a central role in appointing the Commission. It ratifies the appointment of the Commission President, holds confirmation hearings of the nominee Commissioners and then decides whether or not to appoint the Commission, as a whole, by a vote of confidence.
Parliament also has the right to censure the Commission: a 'motion of censure' against the Commission adopted by an absolute majority of MEPs and two-thirds of the votes cast would force the Commission to resign. To date Parliament has never adopted a motion of censure, but its power to do so acts as a powerful deterrent.  read more about EP

Asif arrested today
Pro-reform activists Ismail Asif has been arrested today in an attempt to crush the morale of the public and intimidate the pro-democracy activities in the Maldives. Mr. Asif is known for holding a public debate on Constitutional Reform and more famously for his "Dictator Birthday Party" in July, which angered the regime very much. It is believed that more arrests are imminent and despite mounting international pressure Gayyoom remains relentless and true to his character.

 Blast from the past

Asif's Birthday brings Gayyoom to full alert

As ever, I had an invitation to this party. Mr. Ismail Asif got permission from Jamaaluddeen School and hired the hall for his 33rd Birthday Party. I was later told that it was not even his Birthday but he just felt like celebrating the day a little bit early. Similar to Nov 3rd being Victory Day in Maldives because Gayyoom felt like it in spite of that day being the darkest day of Maldives in living memory.
Initially there was some problem at the gate of the school. Some senior staff came out and said that they could not give the hall because Mr. Abdulla Solih, Asst. Director General at the Ministry of Education has ordered them that this party should not be allowed to go on. However, since there invitees were already at the gate, after some negotiations, everyone went in. read more

Maldives Pledges Reforms after EU Aid Threat

The Maldives, stung by criticism of a degrading human rights record, assured the EU today that it was taking steps to lift a state of emergency and to introduce democratic reforms. The government said it "remains wholly and totally committed to the process of democratic and constitutional reform" and is hopeful that it will be in a position to lift the state of emergency "in a matter of weeks." read more

This is a translation of the news article  published in the President's Official Website yesterday  upon the resolution being passed in the European Parliament on Maldives. Local TV and Radio are claiming that this Resolution is not worth anything and EU Commission is fully behind the government of Maldives. Furthermore, many local press is personally attacking Mr. Nirj Deva and maintaining the claim that the works by the dissidents is supported by Christian Missionaries, this is in reference to the Christian Democratic Party that Nirj Deva represents. Another Scandal in the Tourism Industry
Bidding is just a name when it comes to resort bidding in the Maldives Tourism Industry. Lhaviyani Atoll Hudhufushi (a 400 bed resort), which is still not in operation after 3 years was given to Giraavaru Abdul Rauf (whose daughter is married to Gayyoom’s son) over three years ago and similarly Haa Alifu Dhonakulhi (a 100 berth marina and a 50 bed resort) which was awarded to a company belonging to Shuaib Shah (Maumoon’s son in law). And now we see a similar scandal in the cases for the recent Villivaru and Biyaadhoo bidding whose results just came out. The EU motion is the best thing to happen to ordinary Maldivians, who want to escape the rampant corruption and brutality of Gayyoom's regime.  In Brief

Gayyoom's propaganda takes a gross and ugly turn

Maldivian TV has been showing isolated incidents of police violence in European countries and claming that EU and the British are hypocrites and that they are the true human rights abusers of this world. Similar images of the war in Iraq and other isolated incidents were also grossly manipulated to convey a similar message. Gayyoom is indeed getting desperate and seems to have no clear plan at the moment.

EU legislators seek to suspend aid to "hell-hole" Maldives

European Union parliamentarians have demanded a halt to non-essential aid to the Maldives and branded the South Asian tourist spot a "hell-hole" for locals since the declaration of emergency rule, a statement said Wednesday.
The European Parliament unanimously passed a resolution this week calling for the suspension of parts of a two-million-euro aid package and a EU entry ban for Maldives government members, said the statement released by the EU mission here.
"After a month of terror on the Maldives, the EU should not hesitate in blocking any further payment of non-essential elements of the two million euro aid budget to these islands," the statement said. read more

EU to block aid and travel to the Maldives

Strasbourg, France (eTurbo News) -- Calling for the immediate release of political prisoners in the Maldives Islands, powerful Members of the European Parliament (MEP), representing all political groups, and 455 million people from 25 member states, made clear that it is "totally unacceptable" for the EU to give aid of millions of euros to ensure the survival of a 25-year-long dictatorship.
An All-Party "urgency" motion, tabled for this week's European Parliament plenary by key European Parliament figures (listed below), demands the immediate release of moderate pro-democracy opposition members, arrested in mid-August by Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. Currently, some 80 people remain imprisoned without trial or legal representation, amidst credible reports that they are being tortured.
"It is essential that maximum international pressure is applied to ensure these innocent people’s release," said the MEPs." They are in grave danger, and represent the islands' democratic future." read more

Fathulla Jameel

How well do we know Foreign Minister Fathulla Jameel?

Not much. He is quite foreign to most Maldivians as his portfolio indicates, because he has never been assigned a post that required him to relate with the average Maldivian at any point of time during the last three decades.
For most people, Foreign Minister Jameel is known as the longest-serving foreign minister in the world and the most influential and closest ally of President Gayyoom. Among the diplomatic community worldwide, he is most renowned for his outrageous jokes for every occasion, though most of them in very poor taste. This is a tactic he uses to conceal his lack of substance or charisma required for such an important job. read more

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.

[Clause 4 - Labour Party - UK]

No boundaries can hold us!

WE ARE WAKING UP NOW

OUT OF THE PAST, TO DREAM A BIGGER DREAM

WE ARE FRIENDS AND EQUALS

WE ARE DIVERSE AND UNIQUE

AND WE SHOULD BE UNITED

FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OUR DIFFERENCES

WE BELIEVE IN FREEDOM AND COOPERATION

WE ARE A CULTURE EMERGING

WE FIND OUR OWN GUIDANCE

AND WE DISCERN OUR OWN TRUTH

WE GO IN MANY DIRECTIONS BUT WE REFUSE TO DISPERSE

WE ARE LOCAL AND GLOBAL

WE ARE THE WAVE OF EVOLUTION

WE ARE IN EVERY CHILDS EYES

WE FACE THE UNKNOWN WITH WONDER AND EXCITEMENT

LIVING IN THE PRESENT

AND WE SPEAK OUR TRUTH

WE CANNOT BE QUIETED

BECAUSE OUR VOICE IS WITHIN EVERYONE

WE ARE BUILDING A NEW MALDIVES

THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

NO BOUNDARIES CAN HOLD US!

Today's Message to Gayyoom

Come to your senses and listen to your people. You might sill be in power but are you there because people really want you to be? Think hard, no one lives forever. I advise you to do some good before your time is up. Listen to the world too! They can't all be lying, or can they?

Many of us fail to understand why so many people, especially the anti-Gayyoom movement, are passionately writing about Evan Naseem and the other prison inmates.

I realise that the reasons are quite obvious. Most of those people are convicted criminals. Even if the convictions were by the corrupt legal system of the country, many of us have seen how some of these criminals, on whose behalf the scores of people have written, have broken the law and done some despicable deeds.

They are criminals. They deserve to be imprisoned. Yes. But they SHOULDN'T be tortured. They can be kept in prison, separated from family with restrictions on movement and activities as the punishment. Torture cannot be accepted.

That IS the reason why people are speaking on their behalf. We are not saying that the crimes that they committed were good. We are not supporting criminals. We are not supporting drug abuse.

We ARE against the torture and physical afflictions suffered by the prisoners because of systematic abuse of power and organised torture within the Maldivian prison system.

For that we are calling for unity and show of support.
