DO Pardons Rent Fines for Maumoon’s Bangalhi Prince

DO is proud to announce that it has decided to waive the rents and fines of Haa Alif Dhonakulhi COMPLETELY for Maumoon’s Bangladeshi son in law Price of Bangalhi, His Royal Highness Shuaib Shah!
H.R.H. Shuaib Shah was awarded this island in February 2001 for a rent of US$ 7,800 per bed. The proposed resort and marina is to be developed into a 50 bed resort and a 50 berth marina. Each year over 300 luxury yachts and vessels pass through Haa Atoll in Maldives. However, most of them find it difficult to stop over because there isn’t a good harbour or marina in the north. Nevertheless, a lot of them do stop and this benefits souvenir shops and the locals as they can sell local goods and offer tours to nearby islands. The people of Haa Atoll have been begging Maumoon to build a resort and a good harbour in their Atoll for ages now, ever since tourism started booming in the Maldives. read more

Former American Presidents visit Maldives

Presidents Bush Sr. and Clinton arrived in Maldives today as part of their tour of Tsunami hit countries in Asia.

The two presidents are being treated to probably the most elegant welcome ever by Gayyoom, who appears to be tagging along with them during the whole period.

This photo opportunity for Gayyoom is expected to be used as part of his propaganda to win the hearts and minds of the disillusioned Maldivians, especially those worst affected by the disaster.

It is however, regrettable to note that the Presidents are not visiting any of the hard hit islands or are given the opportunity to speak to the victims, rather is treated to a well staged public relations event and tour in Male'.

It is important to note here that the two distinguished dignitaries visited Maldives to pay their respect for the victims of tsunami and not to hail the dictatorship and tyranny of Gayyoom, which has been heavily documented by the American State Department.

Egypt's Irrelevant Constitution
Egypt's constitution is no longer relevant. Not only has it outlived its usefulness as a road map for the people of Egypt; it is responsible for the political corruption and economic stagnation of the last few years. It has become a crumbling foundation upon which Egypt cannot build its future. Engineers condemn buildings with faulty foundations because of hazards to communities. Egypt needs to dismantle its dilapidated constitution because of the demonstrated hazards to its people. Egypt needs a fresh start to overhaul the foundations of its socio-political development. read more

Does Maumoom know anything about Tourism?
The Maldivian archipelago consists of over 1,000 islands, all surrounded by the finest white sand beaches and warm crystal blue waters offering an underwater utopia of unparalleled colour and marine life. It is regarded as one of the most stunning destinations in the world in terms of dive locations and is also perfect for a whole variety of watersports in the shallow, emerald lagoons ideal for the novice or expert. However, sadly many tourism experts now believe that with the current approach Mr Maumoon is taking, the Maldivian Tourist industry may take a huge fall. read more

Gayyoom offers mouth-watering deal for MDP backed winner MP-elect ADK Nashid

Dhaalu  Majlis member (elect) Ahmed Nashid (ADK Nashid) (who was endorsed by MDP) has been offered a tempting offer by Gayyoom.

ADK Hospital’s lease is about to expire in April this year and Gayyoom has offered to extend this by another 10 years. The premises that occupied Male Central Hospital previously was awarded to ADK in April 1995 for 10 years with a very very very low monthly rent of MRF 60,000. Gayyoom has offered an extension of the contract for another 10 years with the same low monthly rent.
ADK hospital is the only other hospital in Male apart from IGMH and generates revenues of over US$ 3.5 million per annum. Profits are estimated to be around half a million dollars a year. This is definitely a cash cow for Mr Nashid since unlike tourist resorts, Mr Nashid doesn’t have to worry about occupancy or crazy bed rents. Health service has always been a money maker around the world.
Nashid has been given just one week to decide whether he will take this deal or not, he was approached previously just after the election but refused to fall for the offer then.

DO has faith in Mr Nashid and hopes that he will not join the list of cronies. The next government will have the power to terminate the contract and Nashid is certainly clever enough to assess where Gayyoom's regime is heading now.

Clinton, Bush Sr. Will Tour Tsunami Zone
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush will visit Sri Lanka's tsunami-hit southern coast and lead a local fund-raising campaign for the victims, said the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, the capital.
They are scheduled to meet President Chandrika Kumaratunga when they arrive Sunday. They will also view debris clearing efforts and then travel to the Maldives, the embassy said.

Political Terrorism brings down the Maldives
For tourists without any knowledge of domestic politics in the Maldives, it is a country of peace and tranquillity. For locals, who have the courage to speak their mind, it is a country where people live in continuous fear of persecution.

Hussain Manik Dhon Manik betrays his lover Abdulla Hameed
Hussain Manik Dhon Manik and Abdulla Hameed, Gayyoom’s brother, has been an item for a very long time. However, these exclusive pictures of Hussain Manik Dhon Manik with a prostitute taken in a hotel room in Sri Lanka, is clear evidence that he has been unfaithful to Abdulla Hameed.

Maldives Situation Report
Following the enormous budgetary pressures in the wake of expenditures on reconstruction after the tsunami, the Government has decided on a set of austerity measures to reduce public expenditures in other areas. The measures include reducing to a bare minimum all events such as receptions and celebrations of occasions by various government offices during the current year. The same also applies to various tournaments that are organized by various government offices. Foreign travel will also be reduced to those which are deemed essential, the President's Office said in a press release. The directive also calls on government offices to identify other areas in which expenses can be reduced and to act upon them. read more

With the history of Haveery Daily is anything to judge by, this is going to be yet another Gayyoom controlled media, unless Zahir Hussain does a u-turn and serve the public properly, with honesty and integrity.

DRAFT REPORT ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM OF THE REPUBLIC OF MALDIVES: PROPOSALS FOR REFORM
Prepared at the Request of the Attorney General of the Maldives by Paul H. Robinson, Colin S. Diver Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Pennsylvania Law School for the United Nations Development Program - July 24, 2004
Summary Conclusion. The author's review suggests that the Maldivian criminal justice system systematically fails to do justice and regularly does injustice, that the reforms needed are wide-ranging, and that without dramatic change the system and its public reputation are likely to deteriorate further. The author also determines that there are many people involved in the Maldivian criminal justice system who are keenly committed to its reform and who are prepared to devote themselves to bringing greater justice to the people of the Maldives. read the document

How Gayyoom plans to buy-out the elected MPs?Eleven new islands were selected by Gayyoom’s right hand man Ismail Firaq at the Tourism Ministry last year. Somehow he posses an enormous amount of knowledge on this, in the sense that he is better qualified than environmental scientists, resort owners of Maldives and economists.

The list below shows some of the resorts that the newly elected Majlis members who submitted bids for one of more of these 11 islands. As a custom, dozens of new companies were registered to participate in the tender as well and hence DO was unable to get details of all such companies, which would likely have names of other MPs not listed here.read more

Ibrahim Latheef taken to police and warned - 'evacuate the property within 3 days or you will be forced out and punished'

As DO readers can remember, on 5th January we published a story about Mr. Latheef of Olhitherige Hulangubai, who was being evicted out of the property over dispute of ownership. He has been in house arrest for a long time now and it appears that the police is to be moving in to evict the families who have lived there since 1980.

The deadline for eviction is tonight and sources close to the family confirm that they have no place to live and hence will not be leaving the house.

Ever since the story was published, both parties have laid out their case and it now appears that Hameed family has finally won the case. Hameed is the brother of Gayyoom, the ruthless dictator of Maldives and challenging him or his family is impossible and sac-religious. It now seems that forceful eviction is imminent as Chief Torturer Adam Zahir will move in with his 'police dogs' to evict the 40 odd people who live in the house.

Maldives: not quite priceless
The Maldives are heavenly, but they can be pricey too... Kevin Ritchie reports.
It's difficult not to run out of clichéd superlatives when you tell people about the Maldives: it's even worse searching where to start.
For one thing, when you're at the resortsit's actually frowned upon to wear anything more formal than shorts, T-shirts and slip- slops, bare feet are actually de rigueur. It's always warm on the islands and the sea temperature was 28oC when I was there. read more

National Security Service and Police to get Tsunami Bonus of Minimum 1500/- Rufiyaa each

Gayyoom has decided to pay Tsunami bonus to all National Security Service and Police for their contribution to the Tsunami relief.

The minimum bonus would be Mrf 1500/- to the privates and there is an undisclosed amount set for the chiefs; the Commissioner of Police and Chief of Staff, Mohamed Zahir.

These are clear indications that Gayyoom does not want to change his style of government. It still and will remain a military dictatorship. NSS and the Police may have officially been separated but no one believes that it is. Home Minister Umar Zahir is taking orders from Chief Torturer Adam Zahir.

Torture and abuse continues in prisons and in detention centres. No wonder Gayyoom has to pay them to keep them shut.

The plight of Education Ministry of the Maldives
The School Administrative section is the most important section of the ministry, responsible for running and administration of all schools in the Maldives. It formulates policies and goals and also directs schools to achieve higher educational standards. SA is also entrusted with the responsible of strengthening the educational structure of each and every school in the country. Appointing teachers, school heads, and various other resource personnel to schools are done by the SA section. After Dr. Shaugee became the Minister in 2004, he brought in new policies and changed the education system. One of the major changes he introduced was the division of all schools in the Maldives into four zones; Northern Zone, Central Zone, Southern Zone and Male’ Zone. But his new policy was a great failure he did not appoint educated and qualified people as heads of these zones. read more

The Falah Saga Continues
Minivan News has been following the case of Ahmed Falah closely since his arrest on Election Day. We have reported on the brutal manner of his arrest, which was captured on video, and the reported failure of the detainee to have access to a lawyer for over two weeks.
The government said that Falah was disrupting the balloting and that was why he was arrested. Falah has dismissed the charge, stating that he was only filming the protest by voters from Thaa Atoll at Ghiyasuddeen School in Male’, who were complaining that they couldn’t vote. read more

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
