The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) condemns the boycotting of the Peoples Special Majlis (Constitutional Assembly) by a large number of Constitutional Assembly Members belonging to President Gayyoom's party (Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party, DRP). No way will constitutional reform become a success story with Gayyoom in power. On his direct order the elections in 1993, 1998, and 2003 were rigged. People still remember the FPID´s scandal, recent murder of Evan Naseem and the jail shooting in Maafushi Island where many inmates were badly injured and killed. The Human Rights Commission: Asleep? Annulled? Or What?
According to the powers vested on the President of the Republic under article 42 (e) of the Constitution, having constituted a regulation to determine the powers and duties of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Commission was duly formed by presidential decree on 10 December 2003. According to clause 5 of the said Human Rights Commission Regulation the term of office for members “shall be three years from the date of appointment” but before the elapse of the two full years, out of the nine members appointed to the Commission only two members remain. more

Male'- The constitutional assembly scheduled for today has been cancelled because there was no quorum as most Gayyoom's own members in the assembly deliberately did not turn up for the assembly.
All of the MDP members were there and several supporters went to the Parliament square to give moral support to reformist MPs and to ensure that Gayyoom does not get the chance to fiddle with the rules and procedures. Reports say that 8 people have been arrested including a girl named Mariyam Aida. "Gayyoom is deliberately doing this, he does not want reform, he just wants to buy time," said a protestor.
