Press Release
Obstruction of Constitutional Reform
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) condemns the boycotting of the Peoples Special Majlis (Constitutional Assembly) by a large number of Constitutional Assembly Members belonging to President Gayyoom's party (Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party, DRP). MDP can only translate this boycotting as an effort by Gayyoom to delay and frustrate the introduction of democratic reform which would undermine Gayyoom's authoritarian rule. more

Press Release

The power to enact laws, vested in the peoples hands, seized by the President

After having discontinued the sessions of the Special Majlis on the pretext of strengthening security measures, and after terrorising the public by cordoning off some streets with the assistance of the Home Ministry on the pretext of strengthening security at the Citizen's Majlis Chamber, the Administrative Office of the Citizen's Majlis made arrangements to convene a meeting of the Special Majlis at 9.00am on February 19, 2006 and informed the members to attend the session. more

HT Column
Gayyoom goes to extreme turning his back to reality
No way will constitutional reform become a success story with Gayyoom in power. On his direct order the elections in 1993, 1998, and 2003 were rigged. People still remember the FPID´s scandal, recent murder of Evan Naseem and the jail shooting in Maafushi Island where many inmates were badly injured and killed. Both the cases Gayyoom have lied publicly, and I am not surprised as yet it also turn out to be by him "that's simply not true". Given the opposition's often his critics voiced of Gayoom being a congenital liar. more

Constitutional assembly cancelled and several protestors arrested
Male'- The constitutional assembly scheduled for today has been cancelled because there was no quorum as most Gayyoom's own members in the assembly deliberately did not turn up for the assembly.
All of the MDP members were there and several supporters went to the Parliament square to give moral support to reformist MPs and to ensure that Gayyoom does not get the chance to fiddle with the rules and procedures. Reports say that 8 people have been arrested including a girl named Mariyam Aida. "Gayyoom is deliberately doing this, he does not want reform, he just wants to buy time," said a protestor.

As I have mentioned before.. Gayoom has been a very superstitious person. He have done many things in this way. Many of these things are funny for most of us who are not superstitious. The global community has never shown their generosity towards any disaster that can parallel the outpouring support for the victims of the Asian Tsunami that devastated the lives of millions of people in December 2004. THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.

[Clause 4 - Labour Party - UK]
