News about the resignation of Yameen from cabinet and DRP is false

Male' - Many in Male' have been hearing the news that Golhaabo's brother Yameen (popularly known as Raagondi Raajaa or Gui Rasgefaanu) had resigned from the cabinet as well as from DRP, and had threatened to take away few MPs with him. However, a source very close to Yameen has confirmed to DO today that all these were just propaganda and rumours. "He is very upset with his brother Golhaabo but is too cowardice to dissent against him," the source said. "Who is he without his brother Golhaabo, people think he is influential but he really is nothing and lives under the shadow of his brother Golhaabo and the other brother Moakulhi Hameed," said the source further.

Leader Vs Dictator
I was recently reading a speech given by the UK Prime Minster Rt. Hon. Tony Blair on 30th November 2006 under the heading Education, Education, Education – Ten Years On. The speech was awesome from the beginning. He started his speech saying that he visited more schools than any other Prime Minster in the UK. He talks about what he has witnessed in these schools and the lessons he learned from the visits. He then talks about the reforms introduced in to the education sector and the resistance he faced. He clearly spells out what he was trying to achieve and states his number one, two and three priorities are education, education and education. He then explains why these were his priorities since 1997. more

The heckling of Golhaabo on his return from Addu captured on video

An exclusive video footage of the heckling of Golhaabo earlier this month. When Golhaabo returned from his 'controversial' Addu trip on 8th February, he was confronted by many reformists angry about the way he continues to arrest, abuse and torture reformists, including Maldivian Democratic Party's leadership. As Golhaabo got off his speedboat, people began converging on his car and began screaming 'Golhaabo Faibaa' (meaning get-off Golhaabo) and Golhaabo Isthiufaa (meaning we want Golhaabo's resignation!). The crowd followed his car to the gate of his so called palace, Theemuge. video clip

Corrupt and sleazy Justice Minister Jameel

Dictator Gayyoom has a habit of keeping corrupt and immoral people as his close associates and regime movers, amongst these are his cabinet Ministers and appointed MPs. Those associated with him and from the top circle, are of course immune from prosecution and allowed to operate above the law. In this episode, we will look at the extramarital affair of Justice Minister Jameel, who according to very reliable sources is involved in a serious affair with a lady from his native island Fuahmulah. more

Time for a renewed approach to counter the 'Deform Agenda' of Gayyoom
There is absolutely no doubt that quite a lot has changed in the political and social spheres of our small country over the past 3 years. The biggest of these changes are that people no longer respect the Dictator nor do they fear his forces like before. Hundreds have risked everything and sacrificed their livelihoods for the sake of freedom, justice and democracy. more

Who owns Herethera, Champa or Golhaabo?

As we all know, Herethere of Addu Atoll is being developed by the newly formed Maldives Tourism Development Cooperation (MTDC), which is 60% owned by public and 40% by Golhaabo. As it happens, Golhaabo appointed Champa Afeef, one of the leading and richest businessmen in the Maldives, whilst another Dhamaas Soleh was made the Managing Director of MTDC. The main purpose of MTDC was to allegedly to let the public have a share of the tourism industry in the Maldives, but as it happens, that dreams is far from being realised. more

A blurb from the past
"I would not like to go in there as a member the way it runs. It does not work as a Parliament. It legislates, but it legislates what the government wants it to legislate on." Shaheen Hameed
Shaheen Hameed was seen by many of his friends and associates as a man of principle. He was an outspoken critic of his Uncle, Dictator Gayyoom until recently. He has also reportedly rejected cabinet portfolios but now sits as Deputy Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly of the Maldives and has certainly changed sides. So, one must wonder why this sudden change? Well, it is obvious, he has no choice. The survival of his family, The Hameeds, is directly related to the survival of his Uncle's ruthless dictatorship. more

Island Aviation ground handling staff likely to strike on Monday as management ignores their demand for pay rise

Recently we have signed a petition regarding salary increase and discrimination in our company, Island Aviation Services. We signed this petition with great hope that our management will fairly deal with our concerns and would want to keep us in this company but so far management has done nothing about our demands and instead are blaming us saying our actions are illegal. more

The Dream

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.

FREE ABBAS NOW!
Ahmed Abbas, is one of the most prominent pro-democracy campaigners in the Maldives. An architect by profession, Abbas is also one of the most famous artists in the country. His political cartoons have helped many Maldivians breakaway from the shackles of oppression and fear.  His often witty but expressive art had allowed them to stand up for their rights. He has been in and out of Golhaabo's torture chambers  since early 90's and most recently, Abbas was sentenced in Absentia for 6 months in jail on 1st November, without his knowledge, despite the fact that he lives in the capital Male' and has been banned from travelling abroad by the regime. His detention in Dhoonidhoo Prison is nothing but a desperate revenge act by an ailing dictator, who has not the slightest incline about civilization . Fadaboe Golhaabo! Whether you like it or not, Abbas will be free in no time! Click here to see more of Abbas's great cartoons
