Over the last months, the Maldivian security forces have

Urgent:
Intervene Against State Terror in Maldives
Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)
Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has been summoned by the Court in
Male to appear on 28 May 2006 for resumption of trial
for alleged terrorism and sedition charges. The trial on
22 May 2006 had to be postponed for alleged security

that the trial of Nasheed has been postponed because of
security reasons. It is typical President Gayoom's way
of exhausting the resources of International Commission

Fear for Safey of Aminath Najeeb, Human Rights
Defender; Editor of newspaper Minivan
Human rights defender Aminath Najeeb is the editor of the newspaper Minivan,
which has been critical of the government. The authorities are now preparing to
detain her, which would put her at risk of severe ill-treatment. If she is
detained for two weeks or more, she will not be legally able to continue as the
editor of a national newspaper: the government appears to be attempting to
silence one of the few newspapers in the country that dares to criticise it.

Democracy
must prevail
The fight for democracy in our
country must be strengthen. The democracy activities must not be concluded; it
must be defended by the citizens of a land like the Maldives where corruption
and intimations are the daily practice of our leaders. It must be further
developed that our rulers cannot abuse their power to damage the people's
interests. If we give a chance for dictatorship again in our country the little
freedom that we have today becomes more and more illusory and at the end it will
get lost completely. more

Special Message
"Deep
and sincere thanks for helping me" Sandhaanu Didi
When my health was in a
danger, from a foreign land, I cried to Gayyoom's
government, to help me financially and save my life but
I did not get a word of reply from the government. I
repeated the call to several ministers but alas, no
reply so far. Indeed it is a legitimate right of every
citizen to ask for help from their respective
governments in such situations and it is the
responsibility of the lawful governments to help their
citizens at such critical times.
