Mass demonstration on the street of Male' and other larger islands is the only way to remove Gayyoom from power
The public outcry on September 19th 2003 after witnessing the brutal murders of Evan Naseem and his colleagues like Abdulla Ameen was extraordinary. Gayyoom's brutality was fully exposed that day and ever since there has been vocal criticism and organised opposition against him. His image of a benevolent leader is no longer the case and world over now know what kind of a ruthless dictator he is. However, to this day, people are still waiting for him change or even step down but everyone knows that Gayyoom has no intention to surrender his palaces and other amenities and everything indicates that he wants to cling on to power for as long as he can and pass the reign of power to his daughter Dunya Maumoom. Even international political analysts have made this prediction. read more

Can India help democratise Maldives by protecting a 28 year old brutal dictatorship?

He is asking India to protect the most brutal dictator we have ever seen in our history. He is asking India, the largest democracy in the world, to protect a tyrant who has been ruling our country with guns, without any regard for human rights and the rule of law. more

Mosque in Himendhoo destroyed on Eid
Himendhoo - Sources on the island confirm that on this auspicious day of Eid, Golhaabo has ordered the demolition of a mosque in Himendhoo in Ari Atoll because people are praying there more than in the government mosque. With 50 Golhaa Force in full riot gear, the island chief is coordinating this evil act. "They are not even removing the Qurans in the mosque, and we are not allowed to come close to take a picture or any thing," said a resident of the island. More than 11 people have been arrested from the island on charges of practicing a different version of Islam than what the hypocrite Golhaabo preaches in the Maldives. "It is not a happy Eid for us," the man said.

Big Friday could be Liberation Day

Throughout history, struggles for democracy and justice have never been easy. For many, it has taken years and cost thousands if not millions of lives before they realise their dreams. However, in the case of Maldives, the recent organised movement led by a handful of human rights activists in the aftermath of the brutal killings of inmates in Maafushi Jail in 2003, much has been achieved in just a few years. Gayyoom's 'Secret Dictatorship' is no longer a secret. It is classed amongst the most oppressive and despised regimes in the world today. more

Seyku Raseedh's family moves into Hilaaleege becoming a state refugee

Local News
High speed tourist transfer vessel explodes in mid sea
Male' - A Gulf Craft speedboat operated by Sun Travels group for tourist transfer exploded and caught fire this morning, reports say. The vessel was carrying 17 passengers and 3 crews, when it exploded minutes after leaving Olhuveli Beach Resort in South Male' Atoll heading to Male' International Airport. "Couple of minutes after it began the 45 minute journey to the airport, a loud bang was heard and the vessel caught fire. In the explosion, some crew and guest were in fact thrown into the sea, but all were rescued and brought to Male' by Sea Plane within an hour of the incident," said a source in Sun Travels. More than 3 people are believed to be in intensive care at ADK Hospital whilst many others suffered minor burns and injuries.
There has been a spate of incidents similar to this with Gulf Craft fleet operating in the Maldives, with at least two cases reported in the last few weeks. This brings into question the safety and durability of this model of speedboat, which are now built in the Maldives by Gulf Craft in partnership with Gayyoom's top crony, former Foreign Minister Fathulla Jameel.

The torture horror of the honeymoon paradise
AS he left Dhoomidho Island, the feared interrogation centre where he insists he was forced to eat broken glass, Mohammed Nasheed could see the atolls where honeymooning couples from Europe enjoy carefree holidays. Dhoomidho has sandy beaches, palm trees and yachts offshore. From Male, the bustling capital of the Maldives where tourists begin their holidays, it looks like another luxurious beach resort. But out of sight are dank cells where imprisonment, torture and even murder have taken place, according to Nasheed. more

The Dream

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
