News from NSS and Police - Injured detainees are kept in
Club Med Resort
This inside news brief is
compiled from information sent by NSS and Police staff to Dhivehi Observer. Due
to the secrecy with which Gayyoom operates these days, it is very difficult to
verify these news. However, we are trying to obtain pictures of any such scenes
if at all possible. The informants are risking their lives to provide us with
these news. We have not heard much about injuries suffered by police and NSS but
it is highly unlikely as the clashes were quite violent and Yameen's militia (Paateys)
were instructed to inflict as much damage on the police as possible to muster
international support. more

authorities accused of heavy-handed tactics PRINT
FRIENDLY EMAIL STORY
The world's eye
does not often turn on the Maldives. Apart from the
tsunami which devastated the country after Christmas,
the Maldives in recent years have been known as little
more than an exotic holiday destination. But this week
the country's people have more to put up with than just
recovering from the tidal wave which swamped many of
their islands. Authorities there have been accused of a
heavy-handed crackdown on the opposition, after
thousands of demonstrators were baton charged and tear
gassed in the capital, Male, for demanding
constitutional reform.

Is
Qasim endorsing oppression?
There is no
doubt that the appointment of Qasim Ibrahim to the post
of Finance Minister was a shock to many of us who have
been struggling to rid this country of Gayyoom
dictatorship. That shock was however not as big as the
shock they got Qasim accepting the appointment because
he has been seen as a man who has his heart in the right
place, a man who worked hard to bring justice and
democracy to the country.
