Maldivian national to be deported from India
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district administration has initiated proceedings to deport the 33-year-old Maldivian national who was detained by the police on Thursday on the charge that he was involved in anti-Maldivian Government activities. The police have given a report to the District Collector stating that Ibrahim Asif had "indulged in undesirable and suspicious activities" after he arrived in India on April 9. A senior police official said that Asif is suspected to have links with the Jamat Islah-ul-Muslimeen, an organisation classified as "extremist" by security agencies of several countries in the world. He said Asif could also have met Wahabi activists who are accused of using India, particularly Kerala, as a secret staging point for anti-Maldivian Government activities. The members of the Wahabi group in India are also suspected to have links with certain persons in Thiruvananthapuram who have business interests in the Maldives.

Seena Zahir reveals his animosity towards Anni plus his politically incorrect thinking
The speaker of peoples Majlis Mr Seena Zahir took a swipe at Nasheed and the opposition. He has stated that on many dissident websites he had been severely criticized for the Majlis incident. Further on he went to say that the opposition doesn’t know the rules and regulations of the Majlis let alone the constitution of the Maldives. What’s most interesting is the way he had referred to himself as the all time political expert. read more

Telecom News
Reclassification of Dhiraagu costs Cable & Wireless 25 million US Dollars
Cable and Wireless has seen US$ 25 of its pre-tax profits for 2004 disappear after adopting international accounting standards. The company's pre-tax profit for 2004 has dropped from US$ 606 million under UK GAAP to 556.7 million under IFRS.
The telecommunications company has had to reclassify its Dhiraagu business in the Maldives, which brought on the US$ 25 million hit to pre-tax earnings. The company had to trim a further US$ 7.6 million off pre-tax profits as the accounting for share-based payments would also change.
Charles Herlinger, the group's CFO, was not overly alarmed by the swing in the figures, as there would be no material effects for the company.
'The adoption of Cable & Wireless' consolidated accounts for the year ended 31 March 2004 has a modest impact on earnings per share and free cash flow', Herlinger said.

Special Report
The uncertain future of Maldives Tourism with Gayyoom

Everyday the Maldives tourism industry is facing increasingly stiff competition from around the world. As Maumoon plans to increase the number of resorts to about 200 in the year 2020, he better have a master plan to attract more tourists because it won’t get any easier. Maldives is not the only country in the world which has islands with white beaches and marine life. It also lacks culture and sight seeing opportunities. So it is time we start thinking of clever ideas with ever increasing rent prices for resorts and fierce competition from around the world. read more

Local News
Police and Military presence in Addu to be strengthened
Hithadhoo - According to reliable sources in the government, more than 200 police and military personnel are to be deployed in Addu on a permanent basis to curb any anti-Gayyoom uprising.
Addu is the second most populated location in Maldives with an ever increasing number of dissident activities and movements.
Male' and Addu people hate Gayyoom and want to see his rule come to an end as soon as possible. There has been very vocal criticism of Gayyoom's government in Addu and hence Gayyoom has instructed his cronies in the Police and Min. of Defence to be ready for any eventualities. It is reported that the new deployment will be accommodated in the abandoned Garment Factory premises in Gan island.

Blast from the Past
Flush funds and family games in the Maldive Islands
The combination of feudal patriarchy, big business and religious extremism that exists in the Maldives is not only lethal for the future of the country and its people but also has serious implications for the South Asian region. The milky white and spotless beaches of the archipelago can give the casual observer the impression that all that there is to those beaches are the white sands by the blue lagoons. What they do not see are the numerous crabs with sharp claws that live in the sand. This is an apt metaphor for the political scene of the Maldives. The government rules unopposed with no political strikes, demonstrations or agitation. There is a seeming air of serenity in which it is easy to miss out the resentment against the government.  read more

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
