Maldivian national to be
deported from India
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district administration has
initiated proceedings to deport the 33-year-old
Maldivian national who was detained by the police on
Thursday on the charge that he was involved in
anti-Maldivian Government activities. The police have
given a report to the District Collector stating that
Ibrahim Asif had "indulged in undesirable and suspicious
activities" after he arrived in India on April 9. A
senior police official said that Asif is suspected to
have links with the Jamat Islah-ul-Muslimeen, an
organisation classified as "extremist" by security
agencies of several countries in the world. He said Asif
could also have met Wahabi activists who are accused of
using India, particularly Kerala, as a secret staging
point for anti-Maldivian Government activities. The
members of the Wahabi group in India are also suspected
to have links with certain persons in Thiruvananthapuram
who have business interests in the Maldives.

Seena
Zahir reveals his animosity towards Anni plus his
politically incorrect thinking
The speaker of peoples Majlis Mr Seena Zahir took a
swipe at Nasheed and the opposition. He has stated that
on many dissident websites he had been severely
criticized for the Majlis incident. Further on he went
to say that the opposition doesn’t know the rules and
regulations of the Majlis let alone the constitution of
the Maldives. What’s most interesting is the way he had
referred to himself as the all time political expert.

Reclassification
of Dhiraagu costs Cable & Wireless 25 million US Dollars
Cable and Wireless has seen US$ 25 of its pre-tax
profits for 2004 disappear after adopting international
accounting standards. The company's pre-tax profit for
2004 has dropped from US$ 606 million under UK GAAP to
556.7 million under IFRS.
The telecommunications company has had to reclassify its
Dhiraagu business in the Maldives, which brought on the
US$ 25 million hit to pre-tax earnings. The company had
to trim a further US$ 7.6 million off pre-tax profits as
the accounting for share-based payments would also
change.
Charles Herlinger, the group's CFO, was not overly
alarmed by the swing in the figures, as there would be
no material effects for the company.
'The adoption of Cable & Wireless' consolidated accounts
for the year ended 31 March 2004 has a modest impact on
earnings per share and free cash flow', Herlinger said.
