exclusive How
can you treat our people like dogs? - Dr. Shaheed meets
Maldives students in UK
Gayyoom's spokesman Dr. Shaheed held a three hour discussion meeting with
the Maldivian Student Association (UK) today in an attempt to explain to them
the political unrest in the country. Attended by several key members of the
current and previous central committees of the
association, it was a well-orchestrated attempt to win the hearts of these students and professionals. One of the most interesting questions
from a
student, with regard to the Black Friday crackdown, was
'How could you treat
our people like dogs?'

news report Five Democracy
Detainees Transferred from House to Male' Arrest
By Minivan News - Five Black Friday detainees, arrested
for their part in the peaceful pro-democracy rally of
12-13th August 2004, have been transferred from house to
Male' arrest today (28th November), reports from Male'
have confirmed.
The five men - IC, Falah, Ahmed Shafeeq, Ismail Asif,
Mohamed Nazeer - were some of the last democracy
detainees to be released from jail. Their release was
thought to have been, in part, due to strong
international pressure on the Maldivian government,
particularly during the hunger strike in Dhoonidhoo Jail
two weeks ago, in which the five were involved.

Opinion
Why Gayyoom
decided on 31 December as the
date for for the upcoming
election. Why he
always wants the day to be a
Friday.
To minimize number of people who vote (how many
work in
87 resorts?). To minimize
amount of international media
coverage (if any). To enjoy
New Year's Eve
(thinking of winning Male' seats). To keep Sappe' and
others away from New Year celebrations (I hope
it will not
work).

Opinion
Protesting is not an act of treason;
it's a means of delivering a message
Many people who took part
in the demonstrations of "The Black Friday" might be
feeling afraid, guilty and ashamed for taking part in
the gathering. Afraid of getting arrested, guilty for
breaking the law and ashamed for being part of a
disgraceful attempt to overthrow their own
"democratically elected" government. Gayyoom’s media has
done a great deal of work to make people realize that
what protestors did that day was simply unlawful, even
sinful and immoral. They were very quick to remind
people that people should respect their leaders ("Verinnah
Kiyamantherivun").

Dr. Shaheed meeting
Maldivian Student Association (UK) senior members today
London -
Gayyoom's
propaganda machine is hard at work
trying to convince Maldivians that
the dictator is the best man to lead the nation. Government
spokesman Dr. Shaheed is today meeting with MSA senior members in
London including members of previous central committees.
However, the list was handpicked, as
DO editor in chief
Sappe' is not invited, despite having been the
chairman
of the MSA for two terms in mid
1990s. 'Students will be scared
to speak their minds,' said an old member who is attending
the meeting. 'I am going there so I can report this and
hear what they have to say in justifying the
dictatorship of Gayyoom'.
DO
has spoken by phone with several members, and asked them to raise the
issue of the continued detention of senior reformists
and dissidents. In addition, to question why Gayyoom is
still spending money on purchasing military gear as he
is doing now in Jordan, as well as why Gayyoom is
censoring the Ukraine
presidential protest from BBC and CNN news.
The meeting will be held
in the Maldives High Commission in London this
afternoon.

Dictator shopping for riot gear and weapons in Jordan
Mariyam Mohamed, Amman - 28 Nov. 2004 Gayyoom has been busy shopping in
Jordan for riot gear, vehicles and arms to build his military might. This is
a clear indication of his intention to remain in power by use of force. The picture shows
Gayyoom inspecting a riot police deployment vehicle at
the KADDB Factory in Jordan.

Ibra's
supporters launch a new website
A website
www.ibra2004.org
has been launched by supporters of
Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) who want to
elect him as MP for Male'. The site looks
comprehensively at the background of Ibra and the
qualities that would win him the support of Male'.
Ibra who is disabled, was
held is solitary confinement for more than 2 months.
There are also confirmed reports that he was tortured
physically by Gayyoom's police. Ibra
was hospitalised and suffered a stroke induced by
a heavy truncheon blow on his head.
Ibra is still held under
house arrest and banned from communicating with
anyone, even the
government.
According his family and
friends, Gayyoom's vicious attack on
the reformist, and his maltreatment, has
caused anger and outrage
among them,
and has made them determined to remove
the tyrant from
power as soon as possible.

More MPs intimidated by
Gayyoom: Lhaviyani atoll
MPs Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) and Hussain
Ibrahim to be summoned to the
NSS police
Male' - Confirmed reports
say that more reformist MPs contesting in the upcoming
parliamentary election will be summoned and harassed by
the NSS police, and that the order is given directly by
Yameen who is currently in charge of the
country in the
absence of his murderous brother. Gayyoom is
apparently on a visit to Jordan on an official
visit.
The
members for Lhaviyani
(Faadhippolhu) atoll are to be summoned and questioned about Black Friday
August 13, and
other public assemblies prior to that day. Gayyoom feels
that there is a link between Black Friday,
the Male' reform debates, and the gatherings near the
capital's Tetrapod square
in early August. It does not take a genius to work
out that connection.
A Commonwealth delegation
is currently in Maldives, meeting with MPs and government
officials to assess the situation
and work out a plan of action for the election observers.
Many believe that Gayyoom
will have no seats in the
majlis parliament, except his 8
presidential seats, if a free and fair
People's Majlis election takes place
on 31 December.
In addition to abuse of
power and public funds by the dictator, he has also warned potential
donors and sponsors from helping any candidate who is
linked to the reform movement.

Gayyoom lies to the people
and goes shopping in Amman
According to Petra, the
official Jordanian News Agency,
Maamoun
Abdul Gayyoom arrived Friday afternoon in Amman in a
short official visit in which he will meet with His
Majesty King Abdullah II.
President Gayyoom is expected to take part in an
Islamic conference which is organized by Ministry of
Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.
Here
is a report from Gayyoom's
official website which proudly said that he will be
inaugurating an
international conference in
Amman: 'The

A discernable shift in British Foreign Policy
Dr Shaheed has been
doing his part too. He's recently been in Colombo and,
hand-in-hand with his guardian from PR firm Hill &
Knowlton, has been driving home the government's key
foreign policy message. Sri Lankan journalists have been
quietly sniggering to opposition figures that in actual
fact Dr Shaheed did quite well - he only needed
prompting from his master once or twice.
However, the recent statement from the British Foreign
Minister, Douglas Alexander, appears to have somewhat
ruined the party.

move into southern
Maldives Around
200 NSS poice officers
have been shifted into
heavily populated Addu
(Seenu) and Fua Mulah
(Gnaviyani) atolls,
and Gayyoom plans to send
more NSS to the south in
coming weeks. New
anti-riot equipment had
been purchased recently
from U.K. as
the crucial 31 December
majlis election
approaches. The new
equipment is said to be
more advanced than the
last stock of supplies.
Shields, batons, metal
masks, ankle guards and
tear gas have been bought. Many
NSS were not equipped with
riot gear when they
attacked Male' on 13
August. They were armed
with steel bars and
lengths of wood, just like
any other street gang.
Local
corruption news Graduating
in Male' 2004 The
acting principal Mrs. Amira
repeated the bad news that there
were not enough jobs, and
she asked all unemployed students to
do volunteer work. Mrs
Amira is the wife of NSS
chief of staff Mohamed
'22' Zahir. Her husband
commands the NSS men who
beat Male' residents
indiscriminately this
August. She often
complains to friends when
she and her husband do not
accompany Maumoon Gayyoom
overseas on the
president's regular family
shopping junkets. These
trips cost the taxpayer at
least US$150,000 each time
- over 19 lakhs or nearly
MRf 2 million. A good wage
for a government employee
is MRf3,000 a month or
MRf36,000 per year. Just
one of these trips that
Amira wants to make, costs
the country over 50
government jobs a year. Add
up all Gayyoom's trips
each year, and add the
millions of dollars
avoided in business and
customs taxes, and the
millions creamed off by
Gayyoom from aid money and
extracted through bribes,
and that is where all the
jobs for these young
people have gone!

Shihab and
Afeef are released but cannot leave Male'
DO has information that
Mr. Afeef and Shihab have now been released but they are
restricted from leaving Male'.
This is a clear indication
that Gayyoom will pressure all reformists who are
seeking re-election and restricting them to Male' means
that MPs like Afeef will not be able to travel to his
constituency Thaa Atoll.
The British Foreign
Ministry and other organisations were alerted about this
incident immediately and the quick release may have been
as a result of international pressure. The UK government
is closely watching the activities of Gayyoom as clearly
stated by the statement at the House of Commons by Trade
and Industry Minister Douglas Alexander, that Gayyoom's
intentions will be tested on the upcoming elections.

Shihab and
Afeef taken to Dhoonidhoo a while ago
DO has received
information that Mohamed Shihab and Hussain Afeef, both
member of the parliament and candidates for the upcoming
election, have been taken to Dhoonidhoo Prison Island a
while ago.
This is clear breach of
law by Gayyoom and we must not tolerate this. Whilst
Gayyoom's candidates are free to campaign around the
country, reformists and anti-Gayyoom candidates are
being intimidated and harassed by the regime. People
like Hussain Manik Dhon Manik, who is standing for Thaa
Atoll seat where Afeef has a clear support base had
reported told friends and associates that Afeef would
not be running in this election. Dhon Manik is very
powerful because he is the lover of Gayyoom's peodophile
brother Hameed, who is also seeking a parliamentary seat
in Thaa Atoll. This is a clear violation of local and
international laws.

support grows in the atolls as Gayyoom breaks election
rules
Led by the
Maldivian Democratic Party, the reformists have
deliberately avoided basing themselves around a single
strongman or new potential dictator. This is a
revolutionary change in political consciousness for
Maldivians.
Apart from personal, business and legal harassment, in
February and August the reformists and their families
faced two full-scale attacks by Gayyoom's small
unofficial Baathist party and the NSS. Gayyoom has
beaten, raped and tortured reformist leaders and their
families, and throughout the atolls the president and
his disgraced brother Minister of Atolls Abdullah Hameed
are loathed with equal intensity.

Vote
Rigging Mechanisms in place across the country now
Feydhoo - In meetings
across the islands of Maldives, the government crooks
are arranging and assigning vote counting and
supervisory tasks to people in government position and
their relatives.
In line with Gayyoom's
Maximum Control Policy, last night in Addu Atoll Feydhoo,
amongst others, it was decided that Mrs. Hawwa would
have the responsibility to oversee the vote counting and
supervision work. Mrs. Hawwa is the sister of Maradhoo
Feydhoo STO Shop Manager Mohamed Rasheed. 'Something
fishy is going on' said the informant.
Similar setups are now in
place across the country.
Ilyas and Abbas Ibrahim
are both self appointed members of the Maldivian
Democratic Party, despite the case been strongly denied
by the party. Abdulla Hameed and Yameen as well as other
family members of Gayyoom are working night and day to
ensure to device a mechanism of deception to fool the
people of the country but most importantly the
international community, who are closely watching the
activities of this tyrant and his government.
In addition to that,
Gayyoom is 'threatening' local businessmen who want to
back reform candidates through his brother Trade
Minister Yameen, so the reformists don't have any funds
to campaign.
Could it be that Yameen
wants a majority in the Parliament and Gayyoom is happy
with it?
Yameen
and Kamaluddheen -
corruption and
incompetence Two of
Yameen's important agents for the Kamaluddheen campaign in
Male' are Shaveed from VB Brothers group and Chandhanee Suja from the Cartunes company which imports used vehicles. Chandhanee Suja is son of Chandhanee Mohodhay, Male's famous loan shark. Chandhanee
Suja's business involves importing vehicles with a 200% customs tax. In return for doing this political work for Yameen, Suja receives waivers on his import duties. Suja prepares false and under-valued invoices for his imports and the Customs department accepts them without question.

the island. No harm will be done. There's no need even
for you to lock your doors when you leave your room. So
secure, so peaceful, that's just one. And the other
thing is, it is very beautiful, it is very nice. We have
crystal clear water and white beaches. The other thing
is, people are lovely, they smile. They do not demand
like some other places, they are ready to serve you,
they are ready to help you. They do not have a kind of
aggressive, they do not demand much from you. That is
because we are a small nation, we are a close-knit
society. Over the years, we have developed that
characteristics, to be very friendly, very cooperative,
and very peaceful. And, we have the most wonderful reefs
in the world. Those who enjoy diving, Maldives is the
best place.

There are many
other reasons why people take drugs, and historically humans have always been drug-sodden creatures.
Maldives' drug consumption has similarities to
nearby Sri Lanka and coastal India, except alcohol is officially banned. Unlike the police forces in ports like Colombo, the NSS functions without legal restrictions and it controls immigration procedures as well. In this corrupt environment, drug smuggling is easy and police seizures are simply another source of supply.

fails on law and order
issue We know charges were brought against the
NSS officer who failed to guard the Sandhaanu Luthfee
when he escaped from
custody in Sri Lanka. Let us hear
the same charges brought against people who failed to guard thieves, burglars, drug
addicts and drug dealers. We heard the announcement saying,
'Search for Fareedh' (the
preacher). Let us hear the names of drug dealers and criminals when they escape. A
few days ago, a husband and wife
were captured red-handed. Both were drug dealers, said Television Maldives, but TVM forgot to mention their names.
Is the Ministry of Defense trying to protect drug dealers by hiding their identity?

Ilyas
link denied
Statement by Dhivehi
Observer Founder and Editor-in-Chief
There has been rumours linking Ilyas Ibrahim, the
Transport Minister and brother in law of the Dictator,
to Dhivehi Observer. More specifically it is to do with
him funding the project and that Dhivehi Observer is
working to make him the next President of Maldives. Let
us make it very clear that we will not support a crook
like Ilyas who has brought nothing but shame to his life
and his constituents of Male'. I worked in Ilyas's last
campaign (1999) on the request of Mr. Qasim Ibrahim
which later turned out to be a regrettable experience.
However my involvement in the campaign was limited to
design and production only. The link may have been
drawn from this association.

Election
News
Ilyas Ibrahim has secret
documents to prove that Abdulla Hameed is not only gay
but a paedophile too
Sources
close to Ilyas Ibrahim has revealed that he has in his
possession damning proof of Abdulla Hameed's illicit and
unethical activities such as sleeping with underage
boys, especially during his many trips to the islands.
This is related
specifically to several statements taken from children
of Mahibadhoo in Ari Atoll. It is believed that Ilyas
uses this to neutralise his position with Hameed, who as
all Maldivians know hates Ilyas and vice versa.

election news Abbas
Ibrahim claims he is a supporter of MDP to gain support
in Huvadhu Atoll
Thinadhoo - Abbas
Ibrahim is claiming to be a supporter of Maldivian
Democratic Party (MDP) in desperation to get elected for
the Atoll once again. He has nothing on his side apart
from him relationship with the ruling family. A
Thinadhoo Saleem (STO) is supposedly going around the
islands saying that as Abbas's spokesman he can confirm
that Abbas supports MDP. DO also has confirmed
information that Saleem uses his relation with MDP
founder and Spokesman Latheef as proof of his claim.
Abbas has no chance of winning in the Atoll and he knows
that. He claimed in the past 5 years that it was his
influence and power that got him elected to the seat of
G Dh. Atoll and hence he did not have an obligation to
assist or help any of his constituents. The people of
Huvadhu Atoll will make him pay for his misdemeanours
and attitude' said Faheem, who is from the Atoll but
lives in Male'. The people of Huvadhu Atoll are not that
ignorant to believe that Abbas could be a reformer let
alone have any links to MDP.

Samarey, you have cheated

Nazim may enjoy things for a while, but you have neglected your

either of you for our atoll, or for the country. How
much, Samarey, do you know about the people of Haa Alifu and their
needs? How many times, as member for Haa

last five-year term to meet the people and
understand their needs? read

Opinion
Don't be fooled with small
benefits from Tourism - your entitlement is much higher
No rules or regulations safeguard the employees from discrimination and abuse of basic
rights. No one can raise a voice against
the inhumane management who
can find any amount of
money to protect the ruling dictators, and these dictators in
return allow them monopolize the industry. World-class
managements with good
international reputations
for treating employees
properly, when they
operate in Maldives their greed exceeds their
conscience because they find a nation
that welcomes the abuse of human rights.
Humiliation and discrimination by foreigners are common practice in this
industry and ignored by the dictatorship.
