Simply Not True, Sweeping Reform and the Road Map

Let us recap on what is happening in our country. Gayyoom came to power in 1978 amidst a controversial power shifting arrangement manipulated by a few in powerful posts at the time. However, we all know that it was a setup and it was not the will of the people. We also know that Gayyoom and his associates were in possession of illegal firearms at the time he took oath of office, which renders his whole reign illegitimate. However, it was the beginning of an almost 3 decade old dictatorship, characterised by total oppression and marred in nepotism and corruption. more

MDP General Meeting "Maumoon is an animal"

MDP's general meeting held in Male' last night was yet another great success according to members who attended the meeting. Gayoom says will publish road-map to reform by end March, admonishes journalists in speech at opening of parliament
A road map to reform would be published by the end of March this year, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said. In his speech at opening of parliament, President Gayoom said that such a tablature would include the government’s plans for reform implementation and would indicate clear time-frames. He noted that a call by him for cross-party dialogue for the purpose did not receive a "desirable response". The President claimed that some objectives of the reform agenda had already been achieved, saying that there was now a political party system and pointing to the establishment by him of a judicial services commission and the government allowing "more freedom to the media". more

MDP protestors unlawfully attacked by Gayyoom's militia but the struggle will continue

Male' - An organised protest by MDP members today near the Parliament Square in Male' did not go as planned because of unprovoked attacks on the protestors by Gayyoom's militia. As Gayyoom was about to arrive to the Parliament for the opening of the new session and deliver his speech, protestors waited to express their views to the dictator by displaying banners and posters calling for the removal of his appointed members in the parliament, which he himself also proposed in his so-called sweeping reform agenda in June 2004 but is now obstructing it by using his appointed members in the parliament. Banners also called for his resignation and the release of party chairman as well as other political detainees. more

Adduvas official photographer arrested by Gayyoom, the looser
Male' - Confirmed reports say that the official photographer of the popular Adduvas weekly magazine has been arrested by Gayyoom's militia this morning as he was at the scene of the protest staged outside the parliament today.
He was handcuffed to his back and was taken away along with six others according to Adduvas officials. Fahud was in fact wearing his official Press Card as well this morning as usual. Fahud has been arrested a number of times whilst taking pictures and covering stories from such scenes but has not shown any desire to stop his courageous and important career despite harassment and torture.
What is most stupid about all this is that in a couple of days these photographers and others will be let out and despite attempts by the dictator to scare them and intimidate them, they come out with a stronger will power and determination to stand up for their rights.

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
