"The threat from terrorism is
low." says the British Government
The Maldives are undergoing a
process of political reform and political parties were
legalised for the first time in June 2005. There have
been demonstrations in the capital island of Male' and
the southern islands in August 2005, during which
violence has been reported. It is currently prohibited
for any person to be out on the streets of Male' from
01:30 to 04:30 (local time). Any person who violates the
prohibition may be subject to legal action. There were
similar demonstrations last year, which also involved
violence and led to a state of emergency from August to
October 2004.

Definitions
of Terrorism - United Nations
The question of a definition
of terrorism has haunted the debate among states for
decades. A first attempt to arrive at an internationally
acceptable definition was made under the League of
Nations, but the convention drafted in 1937 never came
into existence. The UN Member States still have no
agreed-upon definition. Terminology consensus would,
however, be necessary for a single comprehensive
convention on terrorism, which some countries favour in
place of the present 12 piecemeal conventions and
protocols.

It’s been 8 days Dad hasn’t
called which happens to be the first time he is away for so long. All my little
friends told me that he had been kidnapped by the police. But my little heart
knows for sure kidnapping is done by bad guys as in movies who demand a ransom
later but definitely not by the trim, smart guys whom I always admire. Even if
they have kidnapped him for every wrong reason, I want to ask what ransom are
they holding at stake and as far my little heart knows the police only arrest
thieves, murderers, smugglers etc and my dad is for sure not one of their kind.

powerful posts given to influential people
Male' - Yesterday and today, more powerful posts in the
government have been given to people who have sided with

appointed Deputy Minister of Trade whilst Dr. Shareef
was made the Executive Secretary to Gayyoom. Today,
Rilwan Shareef was made Deputy Finance Minister and
Gasim's consultant Nafa Naseem was made the Executive
Director at the Finance Ministry.
Gayyoom is also about to give some other
powerful posts to MPs such as Sun Travel Shiyam and ADK
Nashid. Shiyam is to be appointed Chairman of MTCC Plc
and ADK Nashid is to be made Deputy Minister of Health
according to information. In addition to that Shakeeb-be'

All these reshuffles and new appointments are to ensure

Gayyoom

There is increased speculation that Gayyoom is being
forced to call for fresh elections in order to convince
the international community that he means business when
he says he is going to make the Maldives a multiparty

pressure is being applied to Gayyoom by the Commonwealth
under instruction from the European Union and the United
