"The threat from terrorism is low." says the British Government
The Maldives are undergoing a process of political reform and political parties were legalised for the first time in June 2005. There have been demonstrations in the capital island of Male' and the southern islands in August 2005, during which violence has been reported. It is currently prohibited for any person to be out on the streets of Male' from 01:30 to 04:30 (local time). Any person who violates the prohibition may be subject to legal action. There were similar demonstrations last year, which also involved violence and led to a state of emergency from August to October 2004. more

Lessons for Golhaabo

Definitions of Terrorism - United Nations
The question of a definition of terrorism has haunted the debate among states for decades. A first attempt to arrive at an internationally acceptable definition was made under the League of Nations, but the convention drafted in 1937 never came into existence. The UN Member States still have no agreed-upon definition. Terminology consensus would, however, be necessary for a single comprehensive convention on terrorism, which some countries favour in place of the present 12 piecemeal conventions and protocols. more

An Innocent Cry
Where's my Dad?

It’s been 8 days Dad hasn’t called which happens to be the first time he is away for so long. All my little friends told me that he had been kidnapped by the police. But my little heart knows for sure kidnapping is done by bad guys as in movies who demand a ransom later but definitely not by the trim, smart guys whom I always admire. Even if they have kidnapped him for every wrong reason, I want to ask what ransom are they holding at stake and as far my little heart knows the police only arrest thieves, murderers, smugglers etc and my dad is for sure not one of their kind. more

Anni kept in Kalhuthukkalaa Koshi in Male'

Male' - Confirmed reports say that MDP Chairman Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) was brought to Male' in the early hours of yesterday to be taken to court but due to an 'administrative difficulty' as claimed by Golhaabo, the trial was delayed. Sources are saying that Anni is still kept in Kalhuthukkalaa koshi.

Also, reliable sources said that Anni's lawyer was not given the material being presented by the prosecution, ie. Latheefa has some secrets that she does not want to share.

MDP unable to assemble in Maldives
Male' - Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is unable to reserve an assembly hall in Male' to hold a meeting because the schools have been told by Gayyoom not to give their halls for security reasons. MDP has been blamed for many things and it's Chairman and other leaders are in custody after the took part in a peaceful vigil on 12th August 2005. The party wants to explain it's position to members and brief them on the steps they are taking to secure the release of those who have been arrested. more

Local News
laamumohamednaseemMore powerful posts given to influential people
Male' - Yesterday and today, more powerful posts in the government have been given to people who have sided with Gayyoom over the last few months. Abdulla Salih was appointed Deputy Minister of Trade whilst Dr. Shareef was made the Executive Secretary to Gayyoom. Today, Rilwan Shareef was made Deputy Finance Minister and Gasim's consultant Nafa Naseem was made the Executive Director at the Finance Ministry.

Gayyoom is also about to give some other powerful posts to MPs such as Sun Travel Shiyam and ADK Nashid. Shiyam is to be appointed Chairman of MTCC Plc and ADK Nashid is to be made Deputy Minister of Health according to information. In addition to that Shakeeb-be' from TVM is to be made Deputry Minister of Education. All these reshuffles and new appointments are to ensure that his party wins the elections and allows him to remain in power.

Editorial
Gayyoom getting ready for an election?
There is increased speculation that Gayyoom is being forced to call for fresh elections in order to convince the international community that he means business when he says he is going to make the Maldives a multiparty democracy. Political analysts have confirmed that the pressure is being applied to Gayyoom by the Commonwealth under instruction from the European Union and the United States of America. more

Review

Why the world community is silently watching the crimes against humanity in Maldives?
Some people might be shocked when they hear from the dictator's media that pro-democracy activist and one of the pro-democracy leaders of MDP Mr. Mohamed Nasheed will be charged with terrorism. To be very honest I am not shocked about the dictator's decision because I believe dictator Gayyoom is one of the most dangerous men in this century. more

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
