True and real freedom to the Maldives would be the day
Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom resigns
It really horrified me
when I read the statements regarding Evan Naseem's
death. The fact that Anbaree, Adam Zahir. 22 Zahir and
Maumoon saying they knew nothing about it is a big lie.
The truth is obvious. These are interrogation methods
introduced by Maumoon Abdul Gayyooms regime. And this is
not the first time they have killed people in the jail.

Falah
Still Being Held in Jail
Ahmed Falah is still being held under police detention
in the Maldives, family members have reported.
Falah was arrested on 22 January 2004 - Election Day -
for what the government alleges is disruption of
balloting. Falah has dismissed the charge, stating that
he was only filming the protest by voters from Thaa
Atoll at Ghiyasuddeen School in Male’, who were
complaining that they couldn’t vote.
Family members reported that soon after his arrest the
police told Falah he would be released within 2 days and
therefore there was no need for the detainee to request
for a lawyer.

Atolls Ministry to be
scrapped soon
Male'- There is mounting
speculation that Gayyoom is going to sacrifice his
dearly beloved brother Hameed in order to show that he
is serious about brining change and reform to his rule.
In this context, there is discussions at the top level
that Atolls Ministry should be scrapped off or rather
amalgamated with Ministry of Planning, which is
incidentally headed by Hameed's son Hamdhoon.
This is nothing new to
Maldivians, Gayyoom even sacrificed the 'once powerful'
Ilyas Ibrahim in 1993, his brother in law, in order to
save his good name and remain in power. Gayyoom called
Ilyas 'a thief' and accused him of attempting to kill
him using black magic.
Hameed is heartbroken by
the fact that all his darlings failed to secure their
parliamentary seats, especially his lover Hussain Manik
Dhon Manik, who was even ready to offer front runner
Senco Shareef millions to withdraw his name which would
have increased chances of Hussain Maink to secure the
seat. The loss of seat is apparently affecting their
love life according to close associates and both are
keeping a very low profile. Many wonder why? He has not
been seen in several Atoll Ministry related ceremonies
like the recent re-housing thing in Maamigili.

Sheikh
Fareed is till held in solitary confinement illegally
Male'- Sources in Maafushi
jail has confirmed that Sheikh Fareed is still kept in
solitary confinement despite serving a jail sentence
which was passed secretly whilst being detained for
participating in the August demonstration last year.
Fareed is apparently being
kept in solitary confinement for his own personal safety
but the truth of the matter is that Gayyoom is scared
that he will use the opportunity to give religious
speeches and sermons to other inmates if he was allowed
to be free in jail. Fareed openly challenged Gayyoom's
faith and accused Gayyoom of using Islam as a tool to
oppress people during the demonstration last August.
Gayyoom has accused Fareed with everything from state
terrorism, sabotage, attempted kidnapping of cabinet
Ministers and God knows what else but eventually he was
jailed for apparently spreading religion hatred; this
was after Fareed said that corruption has to be
condemned whether done by government official or not.
As long as prisoners of
conscience remain locked up in Maldives jails and are
ill-treated, the world will never believe Gayyoom's
reform agenda. He should realise that and free them all
immediately.

Torture in Tropical Paradise : State Murder of Evan
Naseem in Maldives, 19th September 2003 - Statements by
Doctors
People all over the world think of the
Maldive Islands as being the perfect holiday paradise. Well, it is
truly a remarkable piece of work by nature. Sun, sand and sea in
abundance! All that a tropical holiday maker or a scuba diver can
hope for! But, the oppressive regime of Maumoon
Abdul Gayyoom, who is the longest serving leader in Asia today, has
been ruling Maldives by fear and intimidation, with no regard or
respect for human rights and in violation of the constitution. The
livelihood of the average Maldivian is simply sacrificed for the
well being and stylish lifestyle of Gayyoom, his family and his
associates.

Maldives Prisoners of Conscience – Naushad, Zaki, Didi,
Nisreen and Fareed must be free now
When we talk about reform
and democracy, and when Gayyoom is claiming to be the
champion of it all, the question that we need to ask is
‘why are there still prisoners of conscience in
Maldives?’ In a society that is supposedly waking up to
the 21st century, these abuses of most basic
rights to express ones views and being imprisoned for
life for doing so really do not make sense to anyone but
to Gayyoom.
The writers and associates of Sandhaanu have been behind
bars for simply expressing their views in an online news
magazine. Naushad Waheed is behind bars for apparently
writing a letter to Amnesty International and Fareed for
giving religious speeches.
There are rumours now in Maldives that Gayyoom is trying
to negotiate and talk to dissidents in Male’ and abroad.
Yes, nothing can be solved without discussions and
without talking but it is essential that both sides get
off to a good beginning. Before any meetings are setup
or any discussions begin between the two sides, as a
gesture of good intent, Gayyoom should really release
these prisoners of conscience.

A Cautionary Note to Members of Parliament
Maumoon wants to save face and buy time with his so-called reform
proposals so that he could stay in power and water down the democracy
movement that is taking place in this country. We voted for the
reformists so that we could bring about, the much needed changes in the
governing body with as little time as possible. We have lost so much
time relying on gayoom and he just seems lost with the empty promises he
makes. He is nothing but a mesmerizing liar, now he is taking about a
second reform proposal on top of the first reform proposal he talked
about without taking any action on it. And yet the Govt chief
spokesperson calls him “the father of democracy in Maldives”. I’d rather
say he wants to make democracy his surrogate child.

"We need substantial and

President Maumoon Abdul
Gayoom told AFP in an interview last week that the
Maldives, despite being South Asia's most prosperous
nation, could not rebuild on its own.
The Maldives has a per capita income of 2,400 dollars
and is heavily dependent on tourism. The waves damaged
26 out of the 87 resort islands.

The United Nations

the disaster hit 70 percent of the economy.

Powers of President
The
source of presidential power or authority lies in the
constitution. In section 42 of the constitution, it says
that the powers of the president are those conferred on
him by constitution, those inherent in the duties under
the constitution and the powers of doing what was
enlisted in this section.

Man
for All Islands?
President Gayoom's
biography is boastfully titled "Man for All Islands."
Written by Royston Ellis, the book was published at the
height of the dictator's career, when it was impossible
to imagine that the all powerful ruler would one day be
humbled and hounded out of office by the very citizens
he tyrannized for a quarter century. And yet, today the
impossible has happened. Following the election debacle
this week, a more apt description for the ageing
dictator would be "Man for Small Islands."

The
Emperor's New Cloths; Does Gayyoom have NDP?
"I see it in the mirror,
I see it hangings on the walls,
Everywhere I go I like to see
The photographic image of myself which I adore"
Gayoom whenever he goes out to meet the people loves to
hear back from the public phrases like "you look smart"
or "you are beautiful". While he may admire his "Fair &
Lovely" cream applied display of photographs in every
government building, this undoubtedly shows the
narcissistic trait in him. Narcissism, a condition of
self- infatuation is aptly derived from the classic
Greek mythology of Narcissus who fell in love with his
own reflection. Today narcissism, although difficult to
diagnose, is more common than when it was first
described by Freud and, more recently, has been
classified as a new disorder called Narcissistic
Personality Disorder (NPD).

Maldives warns opposition against
creating political crisis by inciting violence, promises
reforms
The government of Maldives is desperately trying to find
a pretext not to undertake any reforms. There is a
political crisis in Maldives already and that is people
are sick and tired of the dictatorship of Gayyoom. We do
not need him anymore. He should be grateful to that
people of Maldives for keeping the country in harmony
for so long.

Colombo - God signed His name in the tsunami that
battered Sri Lanka and other countries on December 26,
and sent it as punishment because humans have been
ignoring His laws, Sri Lankan Muslims say.
Proof, according to Mohamed Faizeen, manager of the
Centre for Islamic Studies in Colombo, is a satellite
picture taken seconds after the tsunami smashed into Sri
Lanka's west coast near the town of Kalutara and as it
was receding.

A Message for Gayoom
THERE IS LITTLE
that is democratic about parliamentary elections in the
Maldives. Political parties are banned. Candidates can
contest only as “independents” and cannot campaign. And
until now, only those with a demonstrated record of
unquestioning loyalty to President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom
could win, turning the 50-member majlis (eight members
are nominated by the President), as the parliament is
known, into a rubber stamp for his decisions.
But the claim by the Sri Lanka-based Maldivian
Democratic Party (MDP), which is leading the movement
for democratic and political reform in the country, that
18 of the candidates who won in last week’s
parliamentary elections were backed by it, has given the
five-yearly charade an interesting twist.

Tsunami Relief Aid sitting
near the Atoll Office in Naifaru
Thousands of people from
around the world responded instantly to the call for
help for the tsunami victims in the region. In
particular, we have seen a selfless approach by many
from abroad and local groups to help the victims in the
Maldives.
However, it is regrettable
that the Maldivian authorities are not coordinating
these activities adequately and there are reports coming
from various locations in Maldives that 'aid' is sitting
in Atoll and Island offices without being distributed in
a timely manner. People of Naifaru have in this regard,
raised the alarm because some of these items are even
perishable. A more serious coordination effort is now
needed and Gayyoom should stop interfering with these
activities and invite NGOs to do their work without
restrictions.
Maldives
warns opposition against creating political crisis by
inciting violence, promises reforms
The Maldives government on
Saturday warned the opposition not to create a political
crisis by inciting violence, as it promised reforms to
deliver a multiparty democracy in the tropical
archipelago.
Calling the Maldives Democratic Party "a ragbag of
dissidents and asylum seekers," chief government
spokesman Ahmed Shaheed urged the opposition to "reject
violence and work genuinely toward greater democracy in
the Maldives."

Maldivian Women need to participate in the political
process
Results of the recent general election gave only 2 seats
to women. This is quite a blow for the trendy feminist
movement.
Aneesa Ahmed is really not a women, according to sources
close to her. She is a man, a cunning one, in the shells
of a man. This is perhaps believable consider who she
has victimized, over the years, very powerful people
like former cabinet minister Zaki, Defence Minister
Anbaree and even the Dictator himself.

How
educated is the Education Ministry
You will be surprised to know that there are one PhD
holder, two persons with master degree and one with
bachelor degree in the main office of the Ministry of
Education at the Ghazee building. Dr. Shaugee’s closest
allies are Director General Abdulla Salih, Director
Akram Kamaaludin, Director Mohamed Waheed (Waddey) and
Ismail Habeeb. Ironically none of them has a recognized
qualification. But they are the policy makers of the
Ministry of Education in the Maldives.

IBRA AND THE MAGICAL PHONE CALL ; A UK-based PR firm is

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as a pro-democratic reformist. Is
MDP member Ibrahim Ismail, of all people, buying it?
When Special Majlis member Ibrahim Ismail won the
coveted Male seat of the Peoples Majlis or Parliament,
Gayoom lost no time in ringing up and singing the
obligatory congratulations. It worked.
"It was a brief call to congratulate me but I didn't
expect him to call me so soon," Ibra told an AFP
reporter, affirming that he now wanted to work with
Gayoom to bring multi-party democracy to the country.

Post Election
Rhetoric!
In the current political situation also he jumped on the
bandwagon and he put up a manifesto on 9 June 2004 and
now he calls himself as the father of democracy. In that
case, Winter Shareef is the great-grandfather of
democracy! This is the biggest joke in the history of
Maldives, isn’t it? His chief political prostitute Dr.
Ahmed Shaheed had rather said to the BBC, Gayyoom was
the ‘clown of democracy’ in Maldives. Then Dr. Shaheed
would not have been embarrassingly gob-smacked. These
guys are trying to fabricate history. In Maldives,
democracy has existed in the past and then reverted back
to dictatorial rule. This is a common phenomenon in many
countries like ours; look at Pakistan for instance.

Maldives
vote results confusion
Opposition-backed candidates in the Maldives won about a
third of seats in parliamentary elections, results show.
The Maldivian Democratic Party said it had won 18 of 42
seats contested. The government put the figure at 12.
Verifying the claims is difficult because of shifting
allegiances in a poll where all candidates had to stand
as independents.
