Switching
sides for the common good
There is an uneasy and disturbing feeling amongst some
members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the
public in general in welcoming former cabinet ministers
and government officials. However, there are lots of
advantages in welcoming those switching sides for the
common good. What is important is to assess their
intentions and give them the opportunity to prove their
capability and see how well they contribute and
integrate with the movement for democratic change in the
Maldives.

Police
Atrocities on the Rise in Male'
In the night of last July 31, hundreds of people took to
the streets in Male' and gathered at the House of
Parliament. When people refused to leave the place, the
police very unkindly kicked members of the crowd
indiscriminately with ankle shoes and gave electric
shocks to the body by contact with electrically charged
batons, captured by any means and threw them handcuffed
to the back into the jeep like bags (of sand). The
police Minister (of home affairs), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali
said, "The family of the boy referred to by the police
has made no report of manhandling".

Islam Q&A
Question-
If a family member dies overseas, what should the family
do over here?
1. can we perform the janaza prayer, that means there
will be two janaza prayers, one overseas and one here.
Is it allowed? 2. Are we allowed to read the quran
together and hopefully the blessing will go to the
deceased? 3. Do we have to do a special Quran reading
and invite people for a meal after three days and after
40 days also? This is being practiced back home and I am
told that the spirit of the deceased comes to the house
for 40 days and wait to get all these blessings.

More anti-Gayyoom protests in
Male' and elsewhere
Around 500 people were
assembled in Republican Square tonight as well in Male'.
A few minutes ago, Star Force was dispatched to disperse
the crowd. According to eyewitnesses, tonight they are
not using stun guns but just batons because of the
presence of foreign reporters who are in Maldives with a
delegation of the Commonwealth.
Also, People of Addu and Thinadhoo are protesting
tonight and calling for the resignation of Gayyoom
confirmed reports say. These small pockets of dissent
are growing in numbers and in strength it appears and
despite Gayyoom's torture and intimidation tactics,
people power is very much winning this battle.

Major crackdown
imminent to stop anti-Gayyoom protests and
demonstrations
Male' -
Insiders in the Police have confirmed that a major
crackdown is imminent and planned for tonight in order
to stop the on-going protests and demonstrations, which
is likely to get bigger this Friday, when a planned
demonstration is already gaining support to free
political prisoners. The informant said that the plan is
to arrest and detain key reformists, including members
of MDP tonight and during the week so that there will be
no one to plan and organize the events to mark the 1st
Anniversary of Black Friday - 12/13th August.
Gayyoom is also due to return to Male' tonight and this
major crackdown is in part for his security as well.
Earlier today, MDP members
Shiham was taken to
police apparently for questioning but has now
been transferred and placed in solitary confinement
according our sources in police. Rough days are ahead
and all reformists are requested to be vigilant and to
stand up for their rights because these arrests are
illegal and totally unconstitutional.
12:05 am - Reports
are coming that police is using the video footage from
previous incidents, especially that of 1st August to
pinpoint and arrest people. A person has just been
arrested. He is Mohamed Siddique, age: around 43, M. Lux
Garden. He is Min. Abdhullah Kamaaludheen's personal
driver, now on leave
