Hussain
Manik Dhon Manik Lobbying for an appointed parliament
seat
Male' - A team of Thaa Atoll leaders have arrived in
Male' to try and lobby with Gayyoom to appoint the
outgoing MP for Thaa Atoll, Hussain Manik Dhon Manik.
Even before the elections last month, there were several
indications that Dhon Manik was not on the winning side.
Dhon Manik is the gay lover of Gayyoom's brother, Abdull
Hameed, the all-powerful Atolls Minister and is believed
to be absolutely heartbroken about loosing his
parliamentary seat. In an attempt to please him, Hameed
has made arrangements for the team to meet with his
mighty brother, Dictator Gayyoom, to make their case.
The team consists of Vandhoo Island Chief Inayath,
Gaadhiffushi Island Chief Abdul Raheem, Madifushi Island
Chief Shaugee Ali and Deputy Atoll Chief Abdulla Shareef.
They will also be joined by Hirilandhoo Island Chief who
is currently in Male'.
In addition to lobbying for Hussain Manik Dhon Manik,
the team will also request Dictator Gayyoom to keep the
current Thaa Atoll Chief Ibrahim Manik Dhon Manik in his
post. People of Thaa Atoll have raised concerns about
his corruptions and abuse of power and it was believed
that he would get the golden handshake but Hameed has
other plans obviously, to save his brother in law.
Does this now mean that Hameed is no longer running the
Atolls shows and that Gayyoom at last is in charge, be
it even temporary.

The ABU is assisting in coordinating a project initiated
by Commercial Radio Australia to restore broadcast
operations in some of the stricken countries, through
the establishment of temporary transmission facilities

other devastated regions to receive news of the relief

In helping

Editorial
How can there be "Reform" in Maldives without a free
media?
In Maldives, Gayyoom controls all forms of media. The
only TV and Radio stations are fully owned and managed
by the government. The three main daily news papers and
weekly magazines are owned by Gayyoom's family, close
associates and cabinet Ministers, in other words, by
hardcore cronies of Gayyoom who have become filthy rich
in the process. There are a number of other monthly
magazines but they all have a self-censorship scheme
because a simple word out of place and that is the end
of it all. Imprisonment and torture is thereafter
imminent. Sadly, all this is being done despite a
constitutional guarantee on freedom of expression.

Red Cross Programs Help
Rebuild After Tsunami
Friday, February 11, 2005 — After the devastating
tsunami roared through the Indian Ocean and struck the
Maldives in December, community leaders gathered to
decide what assistance would help their cluster of
islands get back on their collective feet.
As with other nations affected by the tsunami, this
island community had never suffered such a severe
natural calamity and community leaders were extremely
concerned about the resiliency of its residents. So the
American Red Cross sent Joseph Prewitt-Diaz, MD, PhD, an
American Red Cross psychosocial delegate, and his team
to help.

Maldives - Wave of Change
THOMPSON: Amnesty International says
scores of prisoners have been abused. President Gayoom
said it never happened.
PRESIDENT GAYOOM: None of them have said anything
about any abuse of prisoners.
THOMPSON: So any allegations of abuse are false?
PRESIDENT GAYOOM: No, no
allegations of abuse at all.
Broadcast: 08/02/2005 -
Reporter: Geoff Thompson
THOMPSON: On the 26th of December when I first
heard the news that a tsunami had roared its way across
the Indian Ocean, sometimes generating waves higher than
ten metres, my first thought was that the Maldives must
be gone because just two weeks earlier I was already
here for Foreign Correspondent, investigating the threat
the world’s rising seas may soon pose to this paradise
like Archipelago in which 80% of its almost twelve
hundred islands exists barely one metre above sea level.

An Authoritarian President Who Suppressed Political
Opponents
A recent
documentary broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation’s Foreign Correspondent programme shed a
very balanced view on the effects of the Tsunami, and
Gayyom’s dictatorship of the country. In the interview
Gayoom lied to the reporter about cases of abuse and
torture in his prison’s. The stuttering dictator
unashamedly said “None of them have said anything about
any abuse of prisoners, No, No allegations of abuse at
all..!!!” ; whilst in the same report some of those
abused and tortured shared their truly horrifying
experiences under the dictator, including a very
eloquent Nazim Sattar demonstrating how suppressed and
intimidated democracy lovers in the country were.

Crossing Continents
The Maldive Islands
have asked the international community for well over a
billion dollars to help them recover from the havoc
wreaked by the Asian tsunami. The government there is
keen to restore the islands' image of a palm fringed
paradise surrounded by a turquoise sea of breathtaking
beauty. But for many Maldivians this carefully nurtured
image belies a reality of political repression and the
abuse of human rights.
According to Amnesty International dozens of people have
been locked up without trial in recent years and there
are well documented accounts of ill-treatment and
political intimidation. President Gayoom - who has kept
a steely grip on the islands for the past 26 years -
also attempts to control the internet - and has come
down hard on those who use the web to criticise his
leadership. Those who persist have had to flee and now
operate abroad.
In Crossing Continents, Julian Pettifer travels from
Salisbury to Sri Lanka and on to the Maldives to talk to
the people fighting for the political future of the
islands. He witnesses the country's parliamentary
elections and assesses whether the natural disaster of
the tsunami might bring about the political changes
longed for by the opposition - or whether it will just
be business as usual for the president and his cronies.

Maldives reform hope after
tsunami
By Julian Pettifer
With the eyes of the world on the Maldives as it
attempts to recover from the Indian Ocean tsunami, its
president is coming under mounting pressure to carry out
his promised democratic reforms.
Guraidhoo is one of 1200 small islands that make up the
26 atolls of the Republic of the Maldives, and one of
only 200 islands in the vast archipelago that is
inhabited.
Although the loss of life and property in the Maldives
is slight in comparison with the worst hit nations, its
economy, heavily dependent on tourism, suffered a
serious blow.
Guraidhoo islanders relied on visitors from nearby
luxury resorts - 12 boat loads a day - who patronised
their souvenir shops and cafes.

Statement
given to the Chief of Staff Zahir (Deputy Chief Torturer) on the brutal killing of innocent and
unarmed civilian inmates in Maafushi Prison in Maldives by the authority
The punishment to the
prisoners is solitary detention and handcuffing. How to
handcuff is not in the rules. The rules say only to
handcuff. Solitary detention is keeping him in a cell.
Otherwise than this there is no other place or other way
for solitary detention. One day (I don’t remember which
day now), the Lt. Mohamed Aswan came and told me that
some unusual things are happening in Maafushi prison. I
told him that such things about the prison are not
reported direct to me. Take them up with the concerned
person. As I could recall, I could tell him so much. I
did not know if a report was submitted. That Aswan was
sent back to Maafushi Lt. Col. Ibrahim Rasheed told me.
And he was detained within the island restricted from
coming to Malé. However, a notice of arrest was not
received by the Office of the Chief of Staff. He did not
tell me that the report that Aswan is said to have sent
was not taken any corrective action on any thing by
those who received it.

an hour after he told me about the prisoners having made

reported to the Deputy Chief of Police for the Chief of

The Chief of Police did not say any thing when I told

Update >>>
Male' - 15:40 - The accident occurred near Postal
Junction in Galolhu (Masodige corner). Modee and another
motorcyclist (3 people in total) were involved. It is
reported that Modee has gained consciousness but is
undergoing x-ray and further tests to determine the
extent of injuries sustained to his ear and shoulder. It
is believed that he has sustained a severe blow to his
head and is currently disorientated. Colleagues are
thankful that the situation is at this point not life
threatening, although this is a very premature
assumption and we are now waiting for the results of the
tests and evaluations.

Statement
given to the Presidential Commission by State Minister
for Defence and National Security (Now Ambassador to
India) on the brutal killing of innocent and unarmed
civilian inmates in Maafushi Prison in Maldives by the
authority
"On
19 September 2003, Maj. Ibrahim Latheef called at 11:30
in the night and told me that a prisoner had died in
Maafushi prison. When the Maj. Ibrahim Latheef told me
about this, I asked him that why he did not tell me when
he called me before (8:30 that night) while the
situation in prison was so serious. I did not know then
that he was beaten to death. I ordered at once that the
Chief of the Forces be informed of it through the
Commissioner
of Police. However, given the nature of the incident, I
tried to inform the Chief of the Forces immediately. I
managed to contact the First Lt. Ziyad in attendance. I
asked the First Lt. Ziyad that I had something very
important to tell the president and to call me back
after arranging so to be done. As I could recollect, at
about 11:45 or 11:50 that night the president called me.
On the president’s call, I said that a prisoner had died
in Maafushi prison. Still when I told the president
about that
I
did not know what had happened in any detail. I knew
that having been informed the president did start
looking into the incident. I came to know that the Lt.
Mohamed Aswan had reported of torture in prison only
when Lt. Col. Ibrahim Rasheed told me about it.
Though I am the Minister of State of the Ministry of
Defence and National Security, the ministry is run
practically by the Minister. We seek guidelines from the
Minister. I am the senior most in the overall
administration of the national security in accordance
with the directions of the Chief of Army and Police (Gayyoom)."

The truth about the higher education
scholarship loan scheme for 100 students
I’m one of the students
who applied for loan scheme which was announced by the President of
Maldives in June 2004. I was the first person who took the form from
higher education and I was the first person who met all the peoples from
higher education who were involved with this. Among them one was Dr
Muhusin. He talked to me so nicely and he answered all my question and
he told me how long it’s going to take and how students will be
selected. After four long months I saw on daily news paper Dr shagee’s
interview about the scholarship and the loan scheme.

"Sometimes
it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that
great generation” – Nelson Mandela
Putting President Maumoon
Abdul Gayyoom in-charge of the reform process has
‘disaster’ written all over it. The unfolding UN-Iraq
oil-money scandal is neither the first nor the last
wake-up call to International aid donors, the United
Nations (ironically) and European Countries about the
importance of properly assessing the credibility of the
Governments which they assist. It is time for Maldivians
to understand that neither aid-donors nor tourists would
come back as long as we have an International
Money-launderer cum dictator at the helm of our Nation.
Quoting Former-president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela
at the speech he gave at Trafalgar Square – “Like
slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is
man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the
actions of human beings”

in brief
Gayyoom refutes the
statement by Maldives Human Rights Commission and
questions the integrity of the Members who were
appointed by him
Yesterday, Maldives Human Rights Commission stated that
the recent elections in Maldives was not free and fair,
in respect of several key concerns which they specified,
including intimidation and use of public funds by pro-Gayyoom
candidates.
However, not surprisingly, Gayyoom has rejected that
statement and questioned the integrity of the members of
the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, who he
personally appointed last year, after the formation of
the Commission to appease the murders committed by his
Police in September 2003.
Gayyoom’s argument was that both the SAARC delegation of
eminent persons and the Commonwealth Observers has
‘praised’ the elections and have stated that they were
free and fair. However, fact remains that they praised
that it was well organised, especially the Commonwealth
Expert Team. As for the SAARC delegation, they have
never found any faults in the Maldives elections for the
past 15 years despite that, they have also recommended
to introduce key changes such as vote counting to be
organised in the islands and so forth.
This does not come as a surprise to many reformists and
pro-democracy activists. Human Rights Commission of the
Maldives is perhaps better equipped and manned than the
Commonwealth and the SAARC teams put together. This is
mainly because of the language barrier and ability to
collect more information for being a native organisation
with more experience on the cultures of elections in
Maldives.

Maldive
Human Rights Commission
has declared the recent Maldive elections unfair
The Official Website of
the Maldives Royal Family congratulates the Human Rights
Commission of the Maldives on its display of
independence in declaring the recent Maldive
parliamentary general "elections" well removed from
being free and fair. Although the Commission’s
media release
noted that the elections were an improvement on previous
votes and listed 8 points that it regarded as
improvements, it listed 12 points that made these
elections unfair. The Commission concluded “that the
elections for the Parliament of the Maldives held on 22
January 2005, in general, were not free or unbiased or
removed from unwarranted influence.”

'A Man For One Woman' Why Gayyoom Should Consider
Divorce!
After 27 years of despotic rule Gayoom proudly announced
on 15 December 2004 that the Maldives had progressed
from the status of a least developed country (LDC). What
he forgot to tell us though was that where divorce is
concerned, we have also been a super power, topping the
list of countries in the United Nations in divorce rate.
Multiple marriages are common in our nation due to
Islamic traditions and the ease of divorce, and past
presidents have contributed well to uphold this custom.
