Golden
opportunity for the international community
We want to live a
normal life, free from fear and injustice. The rising
tension in Maldives is the result of years of
frustration caused by a regime that not only abandoned
it's primary duty to look after the citizens but it in
fact deprived them of the most basic rights that the
civilised world now takes for granted. The international
community must and can help us achieve this.

Terror
trial postponed out of fear over public unrest
Male' - Government sources have confirmed that the
sudden change of the mind of Gayyoom to postpone the 2nd
hearing of the trial of Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), is
related to fears over a possible demonstration by the
public. Earlier reports suggested that the trial would
take place on the 14th but was inexpertly moved forward
to 8th Sept. despite complaints from the defense team
that the notice was too short and will make it difficult
for them to prepare their case.

Statement by the Maldivian Democratic Party on
Moratorium placed by the Maldivian Government on
Political Party Rallies
It is with deep regret, but not surprise that the MDP
receives the announcement by the government of the
moratorium placed on political party rallies. Further,
contrary to the government media release of 5 September
2005, as of 1200 noon of 6 September 2005, the time of
writing this statement, The Commissioner of Elections
and Registrar of Political Parties has not summoned any
one from the MDP to inform of such a decision by him.

Anni's
trial to be held tomorrow
Male' - Confirmed reports
say that the trial of MDP Chairman Mohamed Nasheed (Anni)
will be held tomorrow despite the date being set to be
the 14th September as reported earlier. Anni's lawyers
are obviously not going to have enough time to prepare
their defence yet again and Gayyoom is giving no
attention to the international obligations that he has
to fulfil. Reports say that as usual a large crowd will
gather near the court to get a glimpse of their leader,
who has been in custody since 12th August after being
dragged into the Police HQ for staging a peaceful vigil
in Republican Square Male' to commemorate Black Friday
2004.

An
unknown number of youths arrested today for booing at
Gayyoom
Male' - An eyewitness have
reported that an unknown number of youths have been
arrested today for booing at Gayyoom as he got off his
car near the Institute of Islamic Studies in Male' (Mauhadhu).
The youth were just on the other side of the road and
all they did was boo at Gayyoom and make funny faces
according to the eyewitness. Gayyoom has recently
increased his personal security after the recent unrests
in Male' and he is rarely seen outside now. We hope that
Gayyoom doesn't order to kill these youth for booing at
him or perhaps charge them with terrorism. It is quite a
normal thing in the civilised world of today.
A few years back, Gayyoom
actually tortured a demented youth who allegedly threw a
bottle of Coca Cola at his car, whilst it was parked
near a school. So, one cannot rule out a terrible fate
for these guys who got caught today but we applaud their
courage to confront the dictator.

Until recently the Maldives was famous to the outside

Maldivians have also woken up. Despite being heaven on
earth it became apparent there are worldly problems even
in the Maldives.

Auckland company
builds world's first seafloor restaurant
A New Zealand company says it has built the world's
first seafloor restaurant with panoramic views, at a
Hilton hotels resort in the Maldive Islands. Mike
Murphy, an aquarium technology specialist with MJ Murphy
Ltd, in Auckland, adapted techniques similar to those
seen in big public "walk-through" aquariums such as
Kelly Tarlton's Auckland operation. The initial concept
plans for Kelly Tarlton's in 1985 were his first bid to
design aquariums, but since then he has built them in
Sydney, Perth, Queensland, Darwin, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Kuala Lumpur, China, Thailand, Hawaii and Vanuatu. He
built the 9m by 5m wide restaurant - which opened
earlier this year - between a lagoon and a coral reef
offshore from Rangali Island in the Maldives. It was the
brainchild of Ahmed Saleem, one of the owners of the
Hilton's Maldives resort spread over two islands,
Rangali and Rangalifinolhu.

Gayyoom's
shows the middle finger to European Union
"The assembly was a
complete success, we are very pleased that such a large
number of members came and participated" said a Senior
Official of MDP. "However, the whole program was stained
by an act of aggression by Gayyoom's militia. Four
uniformed Star Force people came into the assembly and
took away a loud speaker without even giving us any
warning. They walked into such a large hall with a
capacity crowd and disturbed the proceedings, yet our
members did nothing apart from yelling at them and
telling them not to disturb the meeting. This is a clear
demonstration of how committed we are to non-violence.
Imagine, 4 most hated Star Force personnel walking in
and out of an assembly of more than 8,000 people,
unharmed" the official added.
