Cry for democracy
The crackdown on pro-democracy dissidents in the

Maldives
eases emergency
COLOMBO (AFP) - The Indian Ocean state of the Maldives
has eased some provisions of a state of emergency
imposed after a pro-democracy uprising and allowed the
International Red Cross access to political prisoners.
The Maldivian government said in a statement sent here
Friday that President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom "reinstated a
number of rights and laws that had been suspended since
the declaration of a state of emergency" on August 14.
However, the state of emergency remained in force in
Male, the capital island of Asia's most expensive
resort industry, and a few neighbouring islands.

Just who do they think
they're kidding?
The Maldivian government has spun
many a fairytale in its time, trying to trick Maldivians
and foreigners alike that all is well in the Republic.
However, their web of lies is becoming increasingly
obvious to even the most trusting of observers.

the evidence
Gayyoom refuses to allow independent medical check for Buruma Qasim
Hon.
Qasim Ibrahim's doctor, Prof. Gstoettner of Frankfurt University
in Germany, arranged Doctor Willman to visit Qasim Ibrahim and assess him medical condition.
Dr. Willman went to Maldives on Tuesday
4 October, but Gayyoom
refused to allow him to
see Qasim.
Dr. Willman is flying back to Germany after
a brief meeting with local
doctors who were treating Qasim.
This meeting took place in the presence of the
Gayyoom's NSS police.
Hon. Qasim Ibrahim is a
member of the constitutional assembly who has been in
solitary confinement since 13th August 2004 for
participating in a pro-democracy demonstration.
Hulhule'
rents too high for average
wage earners
HULHUMALE' - Another trap set by the Gayyoom regime to plunder money from
desperate Maldivians
I have a full-time government job which pays me Rf2,500.00 and my wife gets about the same. After paying the ridiculous rent every month, we have about Rf2,000 left to spend
on other necessities.
It is not only the cost of rent that we have to
bear. What about the food, clothing, education for our children, health and other necessities such as communication, transport, water and
electricity? How could we possibly spare a penny to
meet these basic needs? What a nightmare!

Tanzania's leader snubs new jet
Tanzania's President Benjamin Mkapa is not using his new
presidential jet to attend a meeting in Ethiopia after
criticism from the opposition. The controversial $40m US
Gulfstream G550 jet arrived in Tanzania on Friday.
No explanation was given as the president left Dar es
Salaam for Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airlines plane.
An opposition leader described plans to take the plane
to an African Commission meeting to discuss poverty as
"really embarrassing".

Hon. Ibrahim Ismail,MP is in a very critical
condition
Male' - 8 pm - Hon. Ismail (Ibra) has been diagnosed
with a TIA (Trans Ischemic Attack). This is an extremely
serious medical condition. Ibra's TIA is directly
related to how he was treated at Dhoonidhoo. When you
keep a disabled person such as Hon. Ismail in isolation
for such a long time, without any exercise or little
movement, pieces of fat or blood clots can form and
block an artery leading to the brain. A TIA is a warning
signal of an impending stroke. When this happens, a part
of the brain does not get enough oxygen and the symptoms
of a TIA appear. With a TIA, the artery is only blocked
a short time. With a stroke, the blockage lasts much
longer, causing brain damage and often permanent
paralysis. Hon. Ismail fell on the toilet in Dhoonidhoo
a number of times, at least 5 times since his solitary
confinement. He has been feeling dizzy and is weak and
numb on the left side of his body and his family has
been told of a blood clot this evening. He has troubling
using his left hand. These are symptoms of a TIA and
needs serious medical care.
Hon. Ismail's family have requested that he be allowed
to travel abroad for treatment. This just goes to show
that Gayyoom does not care about the well being of his
people. Experts say that an ischemic stroke may be
impending. If a stroke is not diagnosed and treated
within 3 hours of the symptoms, the chances of survival
is extremely slim. Gayoom must be
held responsible for this. Hon. Ismail was admitted to
the hospital yesterday and has been in solitary
confinement since 13th August.
Re-evaluation of Vilivaru
Biyaadhoo Bids expected
Male' - Sunland Shabeer
and Athamaa Ibrahim Abdul Latheef was asked to come to
Tourism Ministry at 12pm today to sign the contracts for
Villavaru and Biyadu Islands. They waited till 3pm only
to be told to come back again at 9pm tonight. Sources
say that Musthafa Luthfee was asked to hold it by the
Presidents Office at the very last minute. They came
back tonight and this time they were told that the
agreement signing has been cancelled. It is beleived
that the government wants to re-evaluate the bids now.
Yet again this proves that Musthafaa Luthfee is just
another Gayoom puppet.
US Students tackle crime code grounded in Islamic law
PHILADELPHIA - Professor Paul Robinson's fall seminar at
the University of Pennsylvania Law School offered a
unique opportunity for the ambitious student: a chance
to make law, rather than just study it.
As part of a project sponsored by the United Nations,
the class's sole task would be to craft an updated crime
code for the Republic of Maldives, a small island nation
in the Indian Ocean.
The job would be no exercise. The students would work
with high-ranking Maldivian officials. Their final draft
would be submitted to the country's parliament. As a
bonus, some would get to travel to the tropical
archipelago, known for its white beaches, coral reefs
and luxurious resorts.
But there was a catch.
The students' client would be a regime that has outlawed
dissent, jailed pro-democracy demonstrators and been
accused by Amnesty International of "endemic torture and
unfair trials."

Gayyoom Unrepentant;
the sinister revenge rampage continues
Maldives dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is taking advantage of a lull in
international pressure against his government's atrocities to order more
arrests and carry out raids on the residences and offices of dissidents.
The world must not be fooled by Gayoom's promise of democratic reforms
this July, but must keep their attention focused on the plight of scores
of detainees who have been held without charge or legal representation
for nearly two months now.

UK government believes international aid is being
misused
The UN Millennium development goals, adopted by world
leaders in 2000 to address poverty, health and
environmental problems, are "off track" in 72
middle-income countries, according to a report by the
Department for International Development
(Dfid) that
shows very few of these countries are likely to meet
their targets, and that progress over the next 11 years
will be slow and uneven.
· Middle-income countries (MICs) include Albania,
Columbia, Peru, Samoa, Iraq, Iran, the Maldives,
Thailand, Ecuador, Surinam and Swaziland. Per capita
incomes range from $750 (£421) a year to more than

Prime Minister Tony Blair is a democratic leader not an
Evil Dictator like Gayyoom
Gayyoom's propaganda machine is working at full speed today after he
received a letter from the Prime Minister of Great Britain,
Tony Blair. According to the following Press Release (2004-598) on
Gayyoom's official website, and local news bulletins on
the government's propaganda outlets TV Maldives and
Voice of Maldives, the president's office
is implying that Tony
Blair supports Gayyoom's illicit activities, such as political
oppression, torture and imprisonment, and especially the
continuing detention
of nearly 200 reformists including
popularly elected members of the Maldive Parliament
and the Constitutional Assembly.

OPINION
The real problem we face today in
Maldives
Our biggest challenge is the distribution of the wealth of Maldives. We know this country has the highest GDP in the South Asia region, but the majority of Maldivians live below poverty line. People in the islands do not have access to economic opportunity; they live in extreme conditions with no proper housing nor staple foods available for them. People are isolated and naive, education is limited, and the population is suffering from bigotry and depression. Where does the money go, and why?
