Mohamed Shaaz Waleed on Hunger Strike in Dhoonidhoo
Pro-democracy detainee Mohamed Shaaz Waleed has gone on Hunger Strike in Dhoonidhoo Jail today, reports from Male' have stated.
Mr Waleed, 34, a known reformist, has been held in solitary confinement in Dhoonidhoo Jail for over 100 days after participating in the August pro-democracy rally in Male'.
It is unclear why the detainee is still being held in jail when the majority of the other pro-democracy prisoners have been transferred to country arrest. Mr Waleed has not been charged and the authorities are refusing to give his family any reason for his continued detention. read more

"Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa is just as corrupt as any of Gayyoom cronies"

Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa is just as corrupt as any of Gayyoom cronies. In fact he has proved he more loyal to Gayyoom than most of other guys by resigning from HRCM the way he did. he is someone who has made it as his primary job to promote the Gayyoom's regime and its policies. read more

Maldivian Travel Company launches "Visit a dictator" tours

A Maldivian company with UK partners have launched a new theme holiday named "Visit a dictator tours", to the idyllic Maldives. Meaningful Holidays PLc  Director David Allham said the company's aim was to provide discerning travelers to acquire added value in seeing one of the last few dictators in everyday life. "Dictators are a dying breed. In addition to all that an exotic destination has to offer, the Maldives has a real dictator that tourists can watch while they spend their holidays", Allhan said. read more

The March for Freedom

After more than 18 years of twiddling, Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom's Government enacted the present Constitution of Maldives, dubbing it the cornerstone of our "Dhimooqraathee Nizaam" (Democratic system). Just as the President continues to do so now, he insults the intelligence of Maldivians by claiming that the Constitution is imperfect due to the fact that it is man-made (November 11 Speech). read more

Breaking News

Dr. Munavvaru has been released from house arrest today

As expected Gayyoom is loosening the grip on the leaders of the reform movement. Political analysts believe that despite numerous attempts to justify the arrest of reformist, there is a lot of dissent even within the government institutions that is making life difficult for him to maintain his dictatorship.

In the past, Gayyoom could simply lock up people for life without charge or trial but those days are certainly gone now. The world is watching him and he has to play it by the book. We wait for the day when we can bring treason charges against this murderous dictator.

Munavvaru is also restricted from travelling out of Maldives. His morale and heath is extremely high, said a friend.

On behalf of DO readers, we salute Dr. Munavvar's tireless efforts to bring freedom and democracy to our tiny country.

Solar Energy wins bottled water contract
Australian owned Solar Energy Systems Infrastructure (SESI) Pty Ltd said it had won the right to provide bottled water to a remote island in the Maldives.
Water production should commence in January after the Foreign Investment Services Bureau (FISB) gave the venture its blessing.
At present, the islanders rely on rain water or expensive bottled water but SESI would ship its technology to the island and charge the islander five times less than what they currently pay. read more

  Blast from the past
Sappe's Message on 10th December 2003
Fellow Maldivians - wake up and face your responsibilities

It is sad to find so many young people who appear to be backing Gayyoom's regime. What could be the reasons behind it? Surely, the gross violation of human rights in the Maldives needs no further elaboration.
People are being killed and tortured, but many are refusing to point the finger at the person responsible. It cannot be possible that these people are content and happy with the abuses their fellow citizens are being subjected to. Personally, I cannot comprehend the thought of any righteous and humane person praising and supporting Maumoon. read more

Qasim Ibrahim has been released from house arrest

Qasim Ibrahim was released at 11:30 tonight from house arrest but is still restricted to travelling abroad.

It is believed that he is in good health but the detention and the house arrest must have had a deteriorating effect on him. He has been in detention and under house arrest for more than 115 days.

We wish him well and a speedy recovery back to normality. This will also give him a great opportunity to prepare his defence against the treason case filed against him by the Dictator.

DO is receiving several messages wishing him well and success; With appreciation for his courageous effort to bring freedom and democracy to the Maldives.

Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa resigns from the Human Rights Commission amidst controversy

Many of Gayyoom's classmates and old friends rose to the highest levels in the government but Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa remained at a middle ranked official ever since his friend became the head of the government. It is common knowledge amongst the Egyptian graduates of Gayyoom's batch that Mr. Moosa was the most brightest of all, who always passed with excellence. Unlike others, he also studied mathematics and was the most humble of them all. read more

When the dust settles
9th December 2004, Except for a handful of Maldivians, independence of powers of the state is an alien concept.. This general lack of understanding, particularly among the islands where more than 70% of the population live, is the reason why the past and current political regimes has and continue to survive in the face of endemic corruption and misuse of power up until today. For majority of Maldivians the president and cabinet ministers are people of unlimited power and authority, immune from the laws of the land, for the common person to serve and obey. read more

Hiyalee is a disgrace to the Cradle of Knowledge; Addu Atoll

Addu Atoll is undoubtedly a cradle of knowledge and home to several intellects. It is home to some of the brightest brains in the Maldives and yet, our rights represented by ignorant and self centred crooks like Hiyalee Rasheed, who do nothing but travel on an official passports as an MP and tell his associates that he is the MP for Addu.

So, why on earth are the people of Addu allow themselves to be enslaved by crooks like Hiyalee who did not even pass his O levels properly? And, why on earth is Hiyalee trying so hard to secure his seat in the parliament?   read more

Ahmed Abdulla gives Mrf 40,000/- to H Dh Atoll youth to buy a sound system

Confirmed sources reports that Ahmed Abdulla, the Minister of Information is trying to buy his way into the parliament. Like all other ministers and government candidates, Ahmed Abdulla also asked his constituents if they needed anything. The youth said that they needed a sound system and without any hesitation, Mr. Abdulla gave them Mrf 40,000/- in cash to buy the system they wanted.

Ahmed Abdaulla is also meeting with people from the Atoll in his house in Male' almost every night and asking them if they needed anything and is mostly paying them cash.

Unlike before, in this election, it is believed that people will not sell their future for a few hundred bucks.

It is completely against the rules and regulations as well as the governing election laws to bribe or pay constituents cash in order to secure their votes. However, since it is the government candidates who are committing this crime, there is no way to bring them to justice.

The front runners in H Dh Atoll are the popular and much respected reformists, Ahmed Adhil and Shuaib Ali (Furahani).

Yameen ships bribes to Addu
Two cars and four motorcycles are being sent to southern Maldives by Minister of Trade Yameen as bribes for Hiyalee's floundering election campaign in Addu.
'A car holds five adults comfortably, and a motorcycle transports two people easily,' explained a DO source. 'So that's 18 votes Hiyalee can count on. I guess that's better than none.'

Hussein Manik Dhon Manik has stress attack
Thaa atoll majlis member (and intimate friend of Gayyoom's brother Abdullah Hameed) Hussein Manik Dhon Manik travelled to Trivandrum to consult a psychiatrist, Dr Justin, when fear of losing his seat in the coming election reached crisis proportions. He wants Dr Justin to stay with him in Maldives as a visiting state dignitary until the election is over.

'This will increase the psychiatrists in Maldives by 100%,' a Maldivian commentator told DO this morning. 'However, it runs the risk of disturbing the fureytha,' he said. 'Many Maldivians believe mental illness is best treated by fanditha. Besides, a bit of paranoid schizophrenia won't do you any harm if you're working for Gayyoom and Hameed.'

Yameen and Gayyoom try to pull a fast one on the people of Haa Alifu atoll
A few days ago, the Fisheries ministry pulled the rug from under Jaufar's feet by cancelling his license as a fish exporter for Zone 1, thereby exposing Jaufar's lies. In a desperate bid to rescue the situation, Gayyoom's brother and Minister of Trade Yameen ordered Ahmed Naseem from his Trade Ministry to make a false announcement about a mega project in Huvarafushi, in order to placate the angry population. Naseem promptly announced a $300 million international harbor project for Huvarafushi.

Some government staff given leave to campaign for their bosses

While the reformist and anti-Gayyoom candidates are struggling with lack of financial and human resources to make a greater impact in the upcoming election, Gayyoom has authorised his 'blessed' members, including cabinet ministers, to use whatever means necessary to secure seats in the upcoming elections. Many government staff are now on special leave, travelling to different locations in Maldives and campaigning hard for their bosses. In addition to this, government candidates are also given unlimited access to the state owned media in Maldives.

This upcoming election will be anything but fair.

Abdulla Kamaaluddeen begins a smear campaign against Mohamed Shihab

AK supporters have been spotted dropping anti-Shihab leaflets on the streets of Male' in the dark of the night. AK is believed to be extremely upset because he is facing really tough opposition this time and he has lost elections before, as in 1999.

Unofficial polls in Male' show Shihab and Ibra ahead with a clear majority. Most people in Male' were under siege in August and September this year after the proclamation of the state of emergency on 13 August. AK is one of the key cabinet ministers who sent the thugs to the Republican Square and the whole of Male' knows about this. AK cannot win this seat but he can steal it with the help of his god Gayyoom.

Gayyoom wants to secure his future by eliminating opposition leaders

State charges have been laid against four Special Majilis (Upper House of Parliament) members of the reformist movement in Maldives. The four dissidents are being charged under Article 29 of the Penal Code are Dr. Mohammad Munawwar (MP), Hon. Rape of Maldives women in Gayyoom's jails
DO email - 5 December
When Ms. Nisreen told the world that 'I was never physically tortured', I heard that Gayyoom and his cronies took comfort and went on to say that it is now proven beyond doubt all these claims about torture in jail are false. They ignored what she said next: 'But the psychological scars from what I underwent in prison are irreversible'.
I was in prison in Dhoonidhoo when she was there. Yes the NSS don't come and beat you up, but I was stripped, asked for sexual favours, watched while bathing everyday, woken up by guards and asked for sexual encounters for better food and medication, and forced to have sex in return for the opportunity to communicate with family in Male'.
I know she went throught the same things because she was only a few metres away from me.
We haven't forgotten those terrible days and we won't let Gayyoom and his cronies off the hook.
One last word to Vaavu Lhahuthu, Naibugey Haleem and Thimarafushi Riyaaz: We will make sure you pay for all these crimes, because many patriotic Maldivians are determined to serve justice to you all.

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.

[Clause 4 - Labour Party - UK]

No boundaries can hold us!

WE ARE WAKING UP NOW

OUT OF THE PAST, TO DREAM A BIGGER DREAM

WE ARE FRIENDS AND EQUALS

WE ARE DIVERSE AND UNIQUE

AND WE SHOULD BE UNITED

FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OUR DIFFERENCES

WE BELIEVE IN FREEDOM AND COOPERATION

WE ARE A CULTURE EMERGING

WE FIND OUR OWN GUIDANCE

AND WE DISCERN OUR OWN TRUTH

WE GO IN MANY DIRECTIONS BUT WE REFUSE TO DISPERSE

WE ARE LOCAL AND GLOBAL

WE ARE THE WAVE OF EVOLUTION

WE ARE IN EVERY CHILDS EYES

WE FACE THE UNKNOWN WITH WONDER AND EXCITEMENT

LIVING IN THE PRESENT

AND WE SPEAK OUR TRUTH

WE CANNOT BE QUIETED

BECAUSE OUR VOICE IS WITHIN EVERYONE

WE ARE BUILDING A NEW MALDIVES

THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

NO BOUNDARIES CAN HOLD US!
