Will
it be a White Friday this year?
Tomorrow is going to be a very important day in the
history of our small nation. On August 12th last year,
thousands converged near the Republican Square in front
of Police HQ in Male' demanding the release of some
reformists who were detained without charge.

everyone... 10,000 Bangladeshi doctors, engineers and
university teachers working in the Maldives

import commodities like ceramics, pharmaceutical
products, leather goods, tea, garments and agricultural
products from Bangladesh as those items are competitive
in terms of price and quality in the international
market. The Prime Minister said Maldives can also take

Support
for the demonstration planned for this Friday
Article 26 of our
Constitution states: "Persons shall be free to assemble
and in a manner that does not contravene the law". This
Friday (tomorrow 12th August 2005) I wish to exercise
this right to oppose the various injustices inflicted on
the people of Maldives by the Zaeem. I hope to attend
Friday prayers, as I usually do, at the Islamic Centre
and afterwards join the people who plan to gather at
Jumhooree Maidhaan to show solidarity and support for
the movement to free all political prisoners unjustly
held in confinement by the Zaeem.

Mohamed Maniku of STO is not sleeping
these days. The annual general meeting of STO is due on

mood. Since Maniku is one of my best friends, I have
done a bit of investigative work and collected a sample
of issues some of the more aggressive shareholders of
STO plan to ask him.

Parliamentarians must act like role
models
In any community the burden of social responsibility
heavily lies on the shoulders of parliament members.
They are vested with enormous powers to ensure that
peoples basic rights enshrined in the constitution are
upheld and observed unreservedly. They must not breach
the very laws they are meant to uphold.
