Relax!
Ya got a fake majlis, fake legal system, fake security
force, fake ministers... Hey! Is that consistency or
what?
Counterfeit rufiya
banknotes have been appearing in Maldives for many
years, but their source has been difficult to trace due
to the unexplained failure of President Gayyoom's
National Security Service investigations. However, the
discovery of over one million rufiyaa worth of fake
Rf500 notes in a Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)
safe in Kooddoo island on Huvadhu atoll is the first
real evidence that President Gayyoom himself is involved
in the scam.

The arrest of Fathimath Shiuna on

opposition members being arrested and released without

Commonwealth Day 2006
Message
from Hon. Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, Vice President and
Shadow Foreign Minister, Maldivian Democratic Party
Today is a day we, as
Maldivians, must rejoice and celebrate, for being part
of one of the largest global families, The Commonwealth, an
umbrella that bring under it more than 1.7 billion
people.

Commonwealth Day
Message
from Her Majesty the Queen
There are few feelings more satisfying than waking to a
new day with a sense of wellbeing. Good health is a
precious gift. Yet many do not share in this. Some forty
million people today are living with HIV/AIDs, well over
half of whom are Commonwealth citizens. Half a million
women die each year in pregnancy and childbirth - and
the death of any mother has huge consequences for the
rest of the family.

Message
from the Secretary General Don McKinnon

reality, not everyone does.

March
13 is Commonwealth Day - This year's theme is 'Health
and Vitality'
The Commonwealth is
a global family of 54 member countries. About 1.7
billion people in these countries make up a quarter of
the world's population. While the day should be marked
not only to know about other countries culture and its
people because of its rich diversity, it should also be
observed to remind governments of their commitment
towards democracy and development and making them
accountable to the promises which Commonwealth
Governments made towards achieving the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), which many countries around
the world are still lagging behind in these promises and
seem very little likely to fulfill their promises.

How
Healthy is Democracy in the Commonwealth
Today, 13 March, we once
again celebrate Commonwealth Day with this year's theme
being 'Health and Vitality'. Whilst many things can be
said about both health and vitality, another important
question springs to mind: 'How healthy is democracy in
Commonwealth countries?' The answer to this question,
four months after the last Commonwealth Heads of
Government Meeting (CHOGM) which was held in Malta,
arguably varies from country to country - but overall
the answer is not as positive as it should be.

Good
Policing and Right to Information: The cure for
Democracy in the Commonwealth?
Commonwealth Day, every
13th March, is always a good occasion for us to reflect
on the importance of the Commonwealth, on what it has
achieved and on what it can achieve. Whilst many still
question its relevance in today's world, wondering
whether it is just a relic of a colonial past gone by,
objectively speaking the Commonwealth can play an
important part in helping countries move towards
democracy. In the past it played a part in ending the
military rule in Nigeria and also played a strong role
in the campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.

Gayoom whenever he goes out to meet the people loves to
hear back from the public phrases like "you look smart"
