One and Only Kanuhura carrying out illegal reclamation

Confirmed reports are coming in that the One and Only Kanuhura in Lhaviyani Atoll is illegally carrying out a massive reclaiming project that even dwarfs the controversial reclamation project carried out by Reethi Rah last year. It has already devoured the nearby deserted island already and the plans are to increase the original island by up to four times its original size. The red line shows the enlargement area. more

Politics & Dhiraagu
Dhiraagu Manager Violating our Basic Rights

Dhiraagu, the Maldives Telecom Company until very recently was labelled as the only company without any political leanings. They normally did not interfere in the political activities and never used any kinds of influences in the past. It’s Sad to say that these days are over. In the last general election to elect the parliament members, Dhiraagu has used force, to intimidate reformists in Dhiraagu and even warned them. more

Democracy - People Power
The Maldivian Public dissent could soon evolve into violence
Friendly and helpful are words that tourists used to describe a Maldivian. The foreigners praise Maldivians for their warm smiles and helpfulness. Maldivians for years have been commended as trust worthy and welcoming. Though we have faced some political problems during our long history, our society has remained a peaceful society since we got independence. Public unrest and dissent was not common in Maldivians until late 2003. Maldivians were obedient and follows the orders of the government whether it’s just or not. more

Asian Centre for Human Rights responds to Gayyoom's lies
First, since the Peoples' Special Majlis has been entrusted with the responsibility to draft a new constitution, it must be given the freedom to fulfil its responsibility. The President's 31-point reform proposals constitute interference into the mandate of the Peoples’ Special Majlis. They are prescriptive and do not provide the opportunity to the Peoples' Special Majlis to address the shortcomings of the 1998 constitution.

"No Reform with Gayoom in Power" - Former Minister IH Zaki
Former two-times Minster and Secretary-General of SAARC Ibrahim Hussain Zaki has lashed out at his former boss, President Gayoom, declaring there is "no chance" for political liberalisation with Gayoom's regime in power.
Zaki, former Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Planning and Tourism Minster said his experiences working within the government made him certain Gayoom will never let go.
"There's no doubt I worked for the government as I would with a friendly party. I wished to seek changes while working within the system. But my ten years of experience in the Cabinet has affirmed my belief that reforms will not be implemented with the present regime in power" Zaki stated in an interview with Minivan Radio yesterday.
Zaki, who joined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after leaving the cabinet, was arrested following the 12-13 August 2004 pro-democracy rally in Male'. Following his arrest he was made several offers of a new post within Gayoom’s cabinet but refused. read more

STELCO: providing a valuable service or getting the big business to the company itself

STELCO: the sole provider of crucial electricity to the nation is often dubbed as a place where they just squeeze the people of Maldives to the extreme. To add insult to the injury Gayoom and his brother Yameen (who unofficially heads the place even now) on many national ramblings have reminded the same poor Maldivians who are struggling day and night to pay their last penny for electricity, that the government is doing well in providing them this service. more

What happened to Miss Maldives Pageant?

After 52 years, the Miss Maldives Pageant was about to make a comeback till the Home Ministry informed the event organizers that the event cannot be held based on religious grounds. This just shows that Maumoon is not good at making decisions at all and as we all know, not able to run a country, let alone an Islamic country. more

Should Yaameen's foreign vessels be allowed to loot Maldives EEZ waters?

According to the Fisheries law of Maldives (Law No. 5/87, 24 August 1987) empowers Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture (MOFA) to "formulate and administer regulations on matters relating to fisheries" and to give it the "obligation.... to explore the possibilities for the development of fisheries to carry out the research need for such development and to develop fisheries". Hence it can be seen that the responsibility of proper and efficient management of the fisheries resources depends on the MOFA. It has to provide a basic framework in terms of clear policies for efficient resource management as well as collecting and analysing statistical information on fisheries necessary for the management and development of the sector. read more

Gayyoom rejected a proposal from a western oil refinery firm to be setup in Gan in 1980
In the early 1980s a western firm (Scimitar Refinery co., with oil interests in the Middle East) was interested in setting up an oil refinery on Gan.  But its proposal was rejected because of Maldives' suspicion that the refinery could be used to serve the US Navy in the Indian Ocean.  Now, in order to prevent the use of Gan for any foreign military purposes including refuelling and servicing facilities, the government has converted the island into an industrial zone with garment factories.  While appreciating the atoll state's regional security policy, India stated that it laid a "strong foundation" for friendship between India and Maldives. read more

Gayyoom National Day Dawn Speech

Yesterday was the Maldives National Day, celebrating the liberation fight of the Maldivian Hero, Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who fought the Portuguese occupation in the 16th Century. History has noted that the Portuguese occupation of Maldives was from 1558 – 1573, during which they tried to convert the Maldivians to Christianity. The invasion or the assault was believed to be led by a Maldivian King, Hassan IX, who converted to Christianity and fled to India but later organised the whole plot to takeover his regency. There appears to be no record of any Portuguese State sponsored invasion of Maldives and hence, it is widely accepted amongst most historians as an internal problem rather than a foreign aggression. read more

Apart from Male', the capital, the political and social awareness in Addu was evident in the way they elected two anti-government candidates to the parliament last week. "We don't have faith in the institutions anymore, even these MPs are not going to do very much because Gayyoom has an overall majority. Who is the Father of the Maldives Tourism Industry?
According to Gayyoom, the whole idea was developed by his good old classmate Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain during their time at Azhar University. He talked about some essay that Zahir wrote whilst they were all students in Egypt.
But, when you think hard about what has happened over the last 30 years in Maldives, credit must go to the very people who have invested everything they had in developing the tourism industry of the Maldives. read more

The ministerial portfolios of Gayyoom's nepotistic government have no powers whatsoever over their affair and everything has to be approved by the Dictator himself, including the agenda of meetings, down to the very fine details such as which verse of Quran should be recited in meetings. read more

Review
Nepotism in Maldives is a world record
The current record for nepotism and cronyism amongst leaders of states is held by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of the Maldives, who at the last count had at least eleven family members, in-laws and cronies in his cabinet, plus numerous close relatives and friends in the highest government posts. read more

Editorial
“It was not laws, but money that limited press freedom” says Dr. Shaheed
Dr. Shaheed needs to get a health check-up because lately he has been babbling nonsense in the name of the Maldivian people aimed at saving the rule of his Master, Gayyoom “the hypocrite of the millennium”.
The most outrageous comment he has made to date was the one on BBC on 24th January this year, when he said “Gayyoom is the father of reform in the Maldives.” Perhaps he was trying too hard to prove his point and got carried away. But, as Chief Government Spokesman he really should not get carried away on world media when billions are watching him. read more

New in Brief
shaviyanilubnazahirLubna Zahir to declare allegiance to MDP
Colombo - DO sources in Colombo have confirmed that MDP senior members are holding talks with Special Majlis Member Lubna Zahir, the daughter of former cabinet Minister Zahir Hussain. Mr. Zahir was a classmate and one of the closest friends of Gayyoom as well as the owner of the leading local daily, Haveeru News.
Lubna, a lawyer educated in United Kingdom, is believe to hold views that are in-line with the opposition Maldivian democratic party (MDP).
However, as an old local saying goes (Ala gahakun keyo nireh nufalhaaney), most MDP members and supporters will be sceptical of this new addition to the core MDP parliamentarians.

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
