18 August 2006
Hulhudheli - The people of Hulhudheli yesterday welcomed MDP's fact finding mission to their island with open arms, whilst notices on the island says that "Atoll Chief and Police are prohibited from landing in this island".
MDP mission was able to speak to the public who welcomed the team on arrival. "I think the whole population of the island were at the beach to welcome us, it was an overwhelming feeling," said Mr. Saleem, the head of the mission, who was released from custody just hours before the mission left Male' to Hulhudheli. "We have heard their plights and we will now prepare our report, so that the whole country can understand why they have had to take such drastic actions," Saleem added.
The mission was supposed to visit Feeali in Faafu Atoll today, who also have begun a protest, but had to abandon that plan due to severe weather conditions.
The people of Hulhudheli are adamant that they will continue with this protest until Golhaabo does as he says. "We want a harbour and our island to be protected from erosion, it is very simple," said the Island Chief Hamdhi.
