There is nothing Gayyoom can do to defeat a united people
by Editor in Chief, Ahmed Moosa (Sappe'), 4 May 2006
After May Day demonstrations in Male', there is an aura of hope and happiness amongst the people in our small nation. According to most people, the total number of demonstration was more than 10,000 and everyone was prepared for the worst but the sheer number of participants appears to have hampered any plan the dictator might have had in his mind to crush the demonstration and carry out arrests as he usually does.
MDP's leadership marching forward with thousands rallying behind is a scene many want to see in Maldives these days. The great majority of Maldivians have always believed that Gayyoom will never leave power on his own accord nor matter how much pressure he is under and will have to be forced out, hence mass public demonstrations are the only tool the people can mobilise to bring down this regime.
The recent successful demonstrations of people power in places like Ukraine, Lebanon, Thailand and most recently in Nepal have stood the test of time and gives hope to our people that no matter how cunning and brutal dictator Gayyoom is, people power can bring him down and that is exactly what is going to happen. It is only a matter of time.
The Maldivian Democratic Party has shown resolved leadership. Despite the resignation of its President the night before the demonstration, the party's leadership were able to demonstrate a very united front to the public which in many ways showed us all that MDP is not about any one person but it is a party of all its members. We must also pay respect to the first ever President of the party for standing down at a time when there was increasing clashes in the ideology of its key leader and most of grass root members.
The reform movement is taking strides forward despite the harassment and obstacles thrown by the dictator and his cronies. As for the reformists, a good public demonstration gives them a sense of freedom and a sense of purpose as well as unity.
This united movement for democratic change which can only commence properly after the fall of this evil dictatorship and it is set to gain further momentum leading the way to the victory day, which we all know is not far away.
Tribute must be paid to the thousands who are defying all odds to face and defeat this 28 year old tyranny in our nation. Especially, it goes to those who have suffered in the hands of this merciless torturer Gayyoom, whom despite the anguish and hardship, have shown resilience in challenging him time and time again.
