A Girl is looking for her family - She is in Phuket Hospital
An email to DO said that this girl is still in a Phuket Hospital in Thailand. Her parents are also missing and she does not remember anything, the email said. If you can help, please get in touch with Thailand Authorities or your local embassy.
The boy was in fact reunited with the parents on 30 Dec 2004. The photo was emailed to DO much later as it is still going around in emails. We also felt important to publish just in case, although we were aware of the reunited Swedish family shown around the world on BBC and CNN.

We would like to send our thoughts to the many friends on the staff of Bandos Island. We have been trying to contact them since Boxing Day but cannot get through. Our thoughts are with you all at the awful time and we hope that you are all ok. We both love the Maldives and hope that we will be able to visit again soon. Also the inhabitants of Hura Island which we have visited several times.
Again our thoughts are with all the people of the islands who have been affected. We have donated to the general appeal in this country and hope that the aid you all need is now getting through. We will watch the news here for updates.
Thinking of you all

Dear Friends,
We spent two weeks in the Maldives last year the first week aboard the atoll explorer which I understand is ok and being used for medical supplies to the islands. The second week was spent on the wonderful White Sands. We are very concerned of the health and safety of the staff and in particular the dearest sweetest person called Waheed. He was our table boy and friend. I know his family live in Sri Lanka and would be so pleased if anyone can tell us if he is safe and well. I understand that White Sands have had bad damage and I prey this will soon be put right. Please if anyone has any info about the island but in particular of Waheed please send to suechamberslovesyou@ntlworld
.com Can I thank everyone who has contacted me with information regarding Hakuraa. Tim Neumann (The Dive Master) has been in contact with me and brought me up to date. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Can somebody please post a definitive list of the types of aide that are required by the people of Maldives. There are many people who want to help, but providing cash is incredibly difficult because we fear that donating money to the 'official' government bank accounts will not truly deliver help to the people.
I can only guess, and from a few discussions I have had with friends in Male, that the primary problem will be water, as I believe the fresh water table on many atolls is now polluted with sea water and is undrinkable. Is this true?
If so, we will attempt to send water, but of course for the long term the best solution may be the donation of desalination equipment, so that those atolls with polluted ground water can be made habitable again.
Posting this information in this forum is probably best so that all of us worldwide who are following this forum, and help.
Best Wishes... The people of Maldives are in our minds and our hearts.
PS EVERYBODY please note, there can be bad health effects from the long term use of water-purification tablets. (I can't speak for all such tablets, but those I have carried with me for emergency use before stated that liver damage can occur if they are used for long periods) Thus the Maldivian people can only rely on them for a short time. There is no substitute for _real clean water_. If DO can confirm that supply of clean water in Male and/or the atolls truly is a major problem now, we, the rest of the world, will respond.. you can be assured of that!

We are based in the UK and were due to travel to the Maldives on 16th January 2005. We have been receiving news from staff and tourists at Meeru Island Resort which totally contradicts news being provided by resort managers and the Maldivian Government. Attached is a sample of the news:
1. We were evacuated yesterday. Meeru is in a state of very bad repair. The only rooms to escape damage were the 100s and 200s, the rest were wrecked. The water bungalows were destroyed as were a lot of the land villas and the new village was gutted too, although you have to hand it to these guys, they started to carry on with the building work straight away and we were all fed and watered despite the carnage. These guys showed real bravado. Please help in any way you can, they probably lost homes and family but kept our best interests at heart.
2. Meeru was hit by three waves. Rooms destroyed. No electric or water. They are cleaning up, but he has said that Meeru will probably have to close.
3. We all fine now. Don't know if I will see you in Feb! Meeru is gone. Smashed all guest rooms, Dhoni bar, Kakuni bar and Village.
4. Meeru to be closed for 2-3 months.
5. The island was met strongly by the tsunami, it was seriously hurt however nobody was killed! Many bungalows are destroyed and the island will probably be closed!
6. All 100s and 600s numbered rooms have guests, and some of rooms in the 200s. But rooms in 500s, 400s and 300s have all been smashed. Everyone's ok and they are continuing to clear up.
7. The whole of the 50 water bungalows completely wiped out and the rest of the resort has suffered extensive damage.

My name is Nikola and I'm from Belgrade, Serbia. My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Medhufushi Island in April this year. Ten most beautiful days in our lives, in the place we considered as the paradise on Earth - not only because of the nature, but also for all those kind and more than cordial people that worked there. We just want to let you know that we think about you all the time, and that we hope our wish will come through. The wish is to come back to Maldives, to Medhufushi, in five years, with our children.
Hope everyone is ok. Anyone with any knowledge of situation on either island please let us know. To all our friends on Bandos we send our very best wishes, and hope to see you all again soon.

Would anyone have any information at all regarding our friends, Robert (Bob) and Judith Smith who were on holiday in the Maldives at the time of the disaster. I do not know the name of the resort they were staying in, but I believe they were staying at a resort with bungalows built out into the sea from the beach. The British Foreign Office has no news of them. Their home address is at Stone Cross near Eastbourne UK. Many enquiries in the UK have been unhelpful.

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at Filitheyo on Faafu Atoll last week and we are devastated at this tragedy. Our hearts go out to everyone and we are very concerned for all our Maldivian, Sri Lankan, Indian and Bangladeshi friends. I have tried to contact the resort but have heard nothing. We are very worried and hope that everyone is safe and well and that all their loved ones and friends in their home countries are safe too. Our thoughts are with all of the people of the Maldives at this dreadful time.

We have recently returned home from a holiday on Meeru Island where we were treated with respect and friendship by all the people working there. I hope we gave back the same respect to them as they fully deserve.
Although all the people were kind, and considerate we particularly befriended our waiter Ismail and up to the disaster was in contact via text messages.
Could you please advise if Ismail, Saleem and the Ocean Pro crew are all safe and well.

My sister is working at the Four Seasons Resort, Kuda Huraa, Maldives. She has been in contact and has confirmed that all staff and guests on the island were ok (only minor cuts) after the tsunami and that nobody was missing.
The guests were evacuated on Monday and flown to Doha's Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The staff have lost much of their belongings (especially those on the staff island) and the hotel is 'a mess'. She believes the hotel will close for some time. They have a generator supplying electricity and one of the desalination units is working, so they have drinking water. Many of the staff have lost family and friends from other parts of Asia.

Ian and I have stayed both on Fesdu and 6 weeks ago on Hakuraa. Our hearts go out to all the wonderful people and their families on both those islands and the rest of the Maldivian and Sri Lankan population. Please support them in any way you can at this time because they deserve it.

Our friend Abdulla Nasih is working as receptionist in Medhufushi (now destroyed). We know that his family is living in Dhiggaru and his cousins are living in Mulee. We know that Meemu-atoll is has been mostly damaged by the flooding. Now we've read in your internet pages that people in Male are trying to organize a vessel to send aid to Meemu-atoll we want to know how we can help them!
More than this: we lost any contact to Abdulla. We know that this morning he was still in
Medhufushi to support the situation there together with another friend of us Ilyas Mahir,
whose family is living in Addu. We know that they lost all communication-systems like mobile-telephone or computer in the flood so we dont know how to reach him.
If someone has some news from them, they can contact us by e-mail.

I'm very disturbed to see Gayyoom has opened a couple of 'Special' bank accounts for donations for relief aid. Given his record, I would ask people to place donations with personal friends / family in the islands if possible for direct re-distribution, OR send donations to internationally recognised charities, making a point that you wish the donation to go specifically to the Maldives portion of any funding they intend to distribute, and of course finally, keep returning to the Maldives islands to holiday. This is for many their only source of income either directly or indirectly available, and is the life blood of the ecconomy for the future.

Firstly my wife and I would like to express our deepest sympathies to all the Maldivian people after the recent tragic events. We were due to be visiting your beautiful country again in two weeks time. We have desperately been trying to find out how the islands of Meeru, Kuramathi, Fesdu and Lily Beach are, and were wondering if you have received any news at all. We have made so many friends with the staff from these resorts that we needed to know that everyone was alright. We know that you are all very busy at the moment but if you do have news of these islands it would be very much appreciated if you could send us some information. Our thoughts and prayers are with you,
