National
Unity Alliance has divided the MDP
A great majority
of Maldivians were very optimistic about their
future when all the opposition parties and
dissident movements joined hands last year in an
attempt to promote the need for a transitional
government to ensure that upcoming multiparty
elections will be free and fair, especially the
Presidential Election which is likely to take
place this August. However, when that failed,
the National Unity Alliance (NUA) began
promoting the idea that they will generate a
single candidate to contest and defeat Dictator
Gayyoom, which will bring the much desired end
to his 30 year old iron-fist rule. The NUA
comprised of the largest opposition party
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Adhaalath
Party (AP), Islamic Democratic Party (IDP),
Social Liberal Party (SLP) as well as the New
Maldives Movement (NMM). The NMM, formed by
three former cabinet ministers, Dr. Hassan Saeed,
Dr. Ahmed Shaheed and Mohamed Jameel, are seen
by many as the trio that negotiated the idea of
an alliance movement.

NARGIS, the name of the killer cyclone that has devastated Burma, was revealed
by Indian officials yesterday to be an Urdu language word meaning "delicate
daffodil". BP Yadav, director of the Indian Meteorological Department, said the
name had been suggested by Pakistan and was next on the list for use when the
cyclone appeared. The Indian department's regional mandate is to provide weather
advisories to seven countries - Bangaldesh, the Maldives, Burma, Oman, Pakistan,
Thailand and Sri Lanka - and to get from them suggested names for cyclones to be
used as and when they appear.

Search
for China quake survivors
A massive search and rescue operation is under way in south-western China after
one of the most powerful earthquakes in decades. Troops have arrived in Wenchuan
county at the epicentre, which was largely cut off by the quake - but heavy rain
is hampering rescue operations. Elsewhere in Sichuan province, frantic efforts
are being made to reach thousands of people under the rubble. The death toll is
now more than 12,000, officials say, and looks set to rise.
