Amnesty International letters to Maumoon remain unanswered?

by a correspondent

Dear Editor,

I travelled with Gayyoom's entourage to Egypt several times during the early 80 and 90s and among the trivial topics he took up with Egyptian authority, was to obtain release of Maldivian drug dealers in Egyptian jails.

President Mubarak categorically refused to entertain Gayyoom and politely told him that he doesn't control the judicial system in Egypt and there is nothing he could do to obtain the release of these criminals.

Gayyoom met these criminals and gave them a hero’s welcome only to remind them that it was he who obtained their release from Egyptian jails. The government paid for their return tickets and that's all that he did.

Gayyoom is linked to drugs for many years. Though he himself doesn't take them, he has been helping drug trafficking. During the mid 80s Scotland Yard arrested an Iranian in Leicester England and he was Gayyoom's agent to distribute drugs in UK.

Brigadier Adam Zahir and several other senior military officers carried (under diplomatic amenity-DPL passports, while travelling with VIPs) confiscated drugs and imported drugs from Burma (through rice shipments from Rangoon) to this Dealer in England. Several Pakistani employees of former MSL were involved in these operations through Mr. Ali Maniku (former vice President of Maldives)

200 Pkgs. of heroine and cocaine were sent to London during late nineties through a senior military officer who travelled with First Lady Nasreena.  The officer who got "F" in every GCE O'level subject got a promotion as a senior officer. These suite cases were specially designed and made in Singapore by Mr. Ali Maniku and several trips were made by these officers to check through Changi to ensure they were safe. They were convinced that if they could pass Changi they could go through Heathrow.

Several innocent Maldivians were asked to carry these bags through Changi to convince Gayyoom that it is safe for his children, relatives and finally his wife to carry them to London. A theemuge' staff carried one of the bags to London with an official passport and delivered 5kgs of heroin to this dealer in UK. Finally Gayyoom was convinced that they were foul proof.

Therefore it is not surprising that the drug dealers are welcomed in his office. Probably they will be employed in his palace because they have learnt broken Arabic during their stay in jail. According to Senior Air Maldives staff President Gayyoom carried 67 pieces of baggage during his last visit to Singapore just weeks ago.

Regards

Many Maldivians will understand that whilst these are speculative, this may not be very from the truth.
