Open Letter
Letter to Addu Member Shareef from a Constituent

26 March 2005

Seenu Atoll Member for Parliament,

Peoples Majilis

Dear Shareef,

The purpose of my writing to you is in order to encourage and support you to stick with the commitments and promises you have made to the people of Maldives during your campaign. Try to remember that you were elected for the people and not for any other agenda and in addition not to mislead your promises for the Adduans as their thoughts in the people's majlis.

I have followed you especially closely; your acts and motions in the parliament. I feel proud to congratulate you on your success in the majlis since you had been elected. However, it is with deep regret and sorrow that I have come to seen yourself withdraw the same motions which would have made you a modern day legend amongst us, the people who you represent. The particular incident which I point to was when you withdraw your motion to choose between secret ballots and open hands form of voting within the parliament.

This in itself would have resulted in great changes for all our dreams, true democracy. I hope your future commitments towards our goal do not end in failure and shame. It was a sad day to us when the man who was our voice, let us down.

I would like to point out that we expect no more from you than for your commitment towards plural democracy and justice. Thus, your voice, attitude and characters must be defined as in a democratic manner, unless or otherwise it is your own perception and not a representation of the people of Addu.

Yours sincerely

Abdul Hameed

(Adduan)

Note:

People usually want to become members of Parliament (MPs) because they wish to play a role in how laws and decisions are made. Most people wanting to become MPs belong to a political party. It is easier for a person to get support with a party that has policies, which are well known, and political parties have more resources to use to win votes than most individuals would have.
