Letter to Editor
It is obvious now that the Maldivian government is covering up the truth

01st January 2004

Dear Editor,

I am a friend of several people in Maldives who I have been in contact with the past few days.  It is obvious now that the Maldivian government is covering up the truth of what has happened to your country, and is using the situation to aide their political campaign for re-election in January.

Also, I have seen hundreds of posting from foreigners wanting to know what happened to their family and friends who were tourists in Maldives at the time of the tsunami.

I offer my services to get truthful information to the foreign media. I have contacts in Australia at ABC and Channel Nine, both national television stations.  I have also made contact with BBC World and CNN in the past 2 days and I know how to pass them information for them to publish/broadcast.

There is almost no information coming out of Maldives, and those news organisations I have spoken with have admitted that they realise that the Maldivian government is censoring information, but unless they can get the information some other way, they have nothing to publish or broadcast.

If you can, I would like you to send me text articles, photos and videos, which I can pass on to many news organisations, so that when the world knows the truth of what is happening there, real help can be provided.  The world is willing to help, but they are being told that Maldives does not need help.  Therefore all of the world's attention is on India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

I would love to receive digitzed video from TVM or any television stations which are actually broadcasting the truth.  If they are not in english that is fine, I have access to translators.

We also have an offer that if somebody can set up an RTSP stream, re-broadcasting maldives TV over the internet, we can then re-broadcast that from Australia... so if somebody there has a VCR and a digital video camera (with USB or Firewire connection to a computer) and Windows Media Encoder, we can set up a live stream so that people everywhere can watch maldives TV in real time... live... from anywhere.  And the load will be taken by our servers, you only need to create a single stream, which could be as small as 32kbps.  We can then re-broadcast that stream to hundreds or thousands of people worldwide.

Please tell the world Maldives real story, and I promise to get it on as many TV stations and newspapers as I possibly can.
You can email me information at alastair@foo.com.au and I can then provide you the details on how to upload the videos and photographs.

Best regards and wishing you all the best of luck and good fortune in these incredibly hard times,

Alastair

Melbourne, Australia
