Early Day Motion on Maldives gaining support in the British Parliament
Mark Oaten London - 12th Sept. 2004 - The following Early Day Motion was tabled at the British Parliament on on 22nd July 2004 by Rt. Hon. Mark Oaten, MP and Shadow Home Secretary of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Early Day Motion: MALDIVES - Oaten/Mark - 22.07.04That this House, seeing the developing situation in the Maldives, urges President Gayoom and all sides to work for urgent, peaceful democratisation; abhors the detention and torture of political prisoners as documented by Amnesty International; urges the full recognition of the Maldivian Democratic Party; and urges the British Government to strengthen its representations on the matter and British and other companies present in the Maldives to refrain from any activity that impedes the growth of democracy.
The early day motion (EDM) is a much-used device to publicise the views of individual Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom and to demonstrate the extent of support among MPs for a particular cause or point of view. Public interest in them, which is well known to Members, perhaps in itself demonstrates their purpose. Even if an EDM does not attract wide national press coverage it may well receive attention locally or regionally.
More about EDM can be found on http://www.parliament.uk/documents/upload/p03.pdf
A total of 63 MPs have now signed up to this Early Day Motion.
