Dhiraagu Internet award tomorrow night

 Miadhu News, 23 May 2004

Maldivian telecommunications company, Dhiraagu has decided to hold their internet award ceremony for this year tomorrow night.

An official speaking from the company said that the most popular local website would also be chosen this year also. Other categories up for awards are 1st 2nd and 3rd place from among students of Primary and Secondary Schools.

The ‘Best static Site’ and ‘Best Dynamic Site’ would also be selected this year. More than 100 people registered for this year’s awards, and 39 people submitted websites. The award giving ceremony would take place at the Dhiraagu training room.

Editorial Note,

One of Dhivehi Observer's site address's (we have many mirrors of our site so as to ensure that Gayyoom does not authorize a block on the material we publish, which is done regularly and we counter that by creating more mirror sites regularly) is listed in the Dhiraagu website directory under the 'Maldives on the Web' under Web design and online information.

Dhivehi Observer hold no hope that Dhiraagu will recognise the fact that we are one of the most popular websites (quite possibly the most popular site, with a very loyal reader base) in the Maldives by Maldivians.

While our hope is not recognition by winning awards, it is quite tragic how Gayyoom and his media regularly deny to the people of the Maldives, even of the existence of our site by refusing to acknowledge it.

They still hope that DO will just simply go away and that all is going to be well soon and they can continue plundering the nation as they have done in the last 27 years.

This site is our commitment to the people of the Maldives in trying to establish true democracy and the freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For our goals to be successful, we believe information to the people is vital and has a direct effect in the choices they make. We intend to provide that information  with or without any acknowledgements of our work. That is our promise to the people.
