Isthafa Ibrahim Manik resigns?
OPINIONFollowing is an email regarding Mr. Isthafa Ibrahim Manik who resigned from his post as Director General of Defence Ministry on 3rd April 2004. Isthafa Ibrahim Manik is known to many Maldivians as being a ruthless person who took maximum advantage of his position under Gayyoom's tyranny.
Dear Editor,
I think we must all rejoice the departure of Mr. Isthafa Ibrahim Mohamed Maniku known as the biggest monster in this administration. During his 44 years he has order to jail, torture more Maldivians than any other official in history. He has built 2 houses and bought a house in Singapore (through his sister in law Olitherigey Khajja - kudu).
I had the pleasure of meeting one of his girlfriends (who worked in Prisons) who told me first hand how he molested the staff both at Defence ministry and Prisons Division and how he gave thousands of Rufiyaa's to them from the government coffers. This young lady's husband was sentenced to life in prison and she was repeatedly raped by him only to let her visit Maafushi Island. I wrote this to President Gayyoom repeatedly to no avail. I sent him, to Theemuge, a recorded conversation between Ibrahim Maniku and this young lady where he bragged about how he could arrest anyone even without the notice of Gayyoom and he has access to unlimited funds to do whatever he wants.
I am surprised to see Gayyoom praising him when he (Isthafa) has taken millions out of the Ministry and tortured hundreds under his leadership.
I am also in touch with senior military officers who tells me that he has abused the prisoners in Maafushi and it was his interest to keep more people behind bars as he gets a Rf.5/- cut (commission) per day per prisoner from the businesses who supply food to the inmates. These funds (not only from Maafushi) but also from other catering agencies are shared among top military brass and senior executives at the ministry.
regards
