Is General Gayyoom still the commander in chief?

 Breaking News

Gayyoom going back to Maldives tonight

Singapore - The speculation about Gayyoom's resignation sparked off some thoughts in Maldives. His own media reported through Dr. Shaheed, the government spokesman that Gayyoom has not resigned and that he is undergoing medical check ups in Singapore.

Gayyoom apparently cut short his medication and is flying back to the Maldives tonight. Members of the public are concerned about the state of the affairs in the government. There are reports of splits and people in high ranked position have even today confirmed that the speculation about Gayyoom's resignation was credible.

According to sources close to Gayyoom, his relationship with Koli Ali Manik has also deteriorated. The elite business group in Maldives are no longer backing Gayyoom and he had earlier planned to resign in November this year according to the same source. He is desperate to leave a commendable legacy even after all the cruelty and torture he subjected to his people. "There is a power struggle in the families" said our source today.

Public is expected to greet him on arrival unless the riot police makes a formidable appearance in Hulhule Airport Island. Their presence in Male' has been sustained well since Black Friday.

Hamdoon Hameed - Minister of Planning - Gayyoom's nephew

Money is being transferred to Singapore

Male' - Informants in MMA say that large sums of money are being transferred to Singapore. Furthermore, Gayyoom and family has applied to become permanent residents of Singapore. Madam Nasreena took her grandchildren out of Schools in Male' and flew to Singapore with them.

In addition to the cabinet meeting yesterday, there was also a meeting of high ranking officials in the Police and the Military.

All the signs are that something quite extraordinary is going on. The country is under Emergency Rule and Gayyoom has been out of the country for more than a week now. It is reported that Adam Zahir is running the show in Police whilst all government operations are directed by Hamdoon Hameed.

DO feels that it is important to alert the public of these news. We are unable to confirm these news but it is vital that the public remains prepared for any change. Those with contacts in high offices and in MMA should try and get these facts.

 Local News
Emergency Cabinet Meeting Underway in Male'

Reports are coming in from Male' that an emergency cabinet meeting is underway in President's Office. Political analysts report that Gayyoom has already resigned and the cabinet is meeting to elect a temporary leader. Hamdhoon Hameed appears to be the emerging winner. However, according to the constitution, the Speaker of the Majlis, Ahmed Zahir will take over and the responsibility will generally lie with the Parliament if President resigns.

Gayyoom has been in Singapore since 21st September. It is reported that his family is also with him along with his grandchildren. Speculation has been mounting that Gayyoom does not want to return to the Maldives mainly because Madam Nasreena has had enough.

Sunland Nazeer arrested today

Male' - Mr. Nazeer, famously known as Sunland Nazeer, was arrested this afternoon. Police raided his office Sunland Travels as well as his home. Mr. Nazeer is one of the 3 brothers who own the leading tour operators Sun Land Travels. Sunland Group also owns and operates some of the most exclusive resorts in the Maldives such as Coco Palm Spa Resort.
Political analysts believe that Mr. Nazeer's arrest is related to the continued detention of his long-term friends, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki and Dr. Munavvar.

Directors of some of the biggest companies in Maldives are now behind bars such as Qasim Ibrahim, owner of Villa Group as well Ali Shiyam, Director of AAA Group.

key reformists who was detained on 13th August (Black Friday), Mr. Abdul Jaleel (popularly known as Abujee) was brought to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) today. He was brought in for a scan and to get some medication.

Abujee has been a strong supporter of democracy and have always been vocal about his beliefs. Abujee’s family members were in the hospital but he was not able to speak with them. Although a prominent businessman, he is most famous in Maldives as a football coach of Victory Sports Club. He was a very healthy and fit man but he looked weak and frail today, according to eye witnesses.

DO informants in Police confirm that a handful of detainees are brought to hospital in Male’ for medication daily. This is clear evidence that these innocent reformists have been severely beaten up. One wonders how long Gayyoom can continue his terrorist activities. He is terrorising the people of Maldives.

Abujee is the uncle of Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), who is a founding member of Maldivian Democratic Party.

Hon. Qasim Ibrahim

Qasim's is still in the Hospital

Male' - Hon. Qasim Ibrahim who was brought to Hospital in Male' on 24th September suffering from breathing difficulties is reported to be recovering well now. The medical staff and his doctors are refusing to discharge him until he is fully recovered. In the meantime, there is concern over his health in the long term and his family has requested the authorities to allow him to be taken abroad for treatment. The authorities have rejected this idea and is stating that this was just a temporary problem.

Hon. M. Thorig

Hon. Qasim recovering well

Male' - 16:00 - Reliable sources confirm that Qasim is recovering well and has been allowed to walk around the restricted ward. Also, his family members have been allowed to see him. Police is recording all conversations in the room. A special colour pass has been issued to allow entry to the ward. We wish Qasim a quick and full recovery. The authorities must not take him back to prison as he is obviously not able to stand the conditions of solitary confinement. Gayyoom should show some compassion to Qasim who is a much respected figure in the Maldives. However, despite the pleas of thousands of Maldivians, Qasim is expected to be transferred to jail tomorrow. Commissioner of Police Adam Zahir is running the show and has been given a freehand.

Hon. M. Thorig

Hon. Thorig has been released after questioning

Male' - 16:00 - Hon. Thoriq has been since released but was informed that he will be contacted if they need any further information. He was asked about Black Friday.

Special Majlis Memember Hon. Mohamed Thoriq detained in Police

Male' - 16:52 - Informants in Police report that Hon. Thoriq has been detained in Police for questioning regarding 12/13th August demonstration. He will also be questioned about who funded his campaign and whether Qasim Ibrahim supported him financially during the campaign.

This further explains Gayyoom's moves as he has detained 13 out of 23 members who walked out in protest on 19th July. These members will obviously create an obstacle for him to conduct his affairs in the parliament.

Qasim is still in the Hospital in Male'

Male'- DO would like to apologise to all its readers that the news of last night was a false alarm. An eye witness informed DO that he was transferred to Jail. A full cardiac setup with equipment has been transferred to Jail which was assumed falsely by our informant in the Police. Readers must note that Police was trying very hard to take him back to jail so that they don't have to be on high alert near the hospital. However, reports are coming that Qasim is still undergoing treatment in IGMH Hospital and he is in Room No. 58. All the arrangements were made to transfer him to Jail but  doctors did not approve. Qasim is in critical but stable condition now. Readers must appreciate that it is extremely difficult to get information from Male' and especially from inside the hospital and the Police force. This important news is not reported in the local press at all. It is a covert operation in the interest of national security and public safety as far as the authorities are concerned.

Villa Group Head Office raided by police

Male'- 04:30 am - Qasim Ibrahim's Villa Shipping and Trading Company head office is being raided since 4:30 this afternoon. They are apparently going through all the paperwork in the building. Previous raids were conducted on the premises but this one appears to be a lengthy and a more thorough one according to the informant. The Police came in plain clothes and entered the premise by force.

Qasim still in critical condition

Male'- 11:00am - Qasim is still in a critical condition and the government is refusing to allow him to go abroad for medical treatment but rather they want to take him back to Dhoonidhoo because they are afraid that people might gather near IGMH Hospital and protest. However, most people are too scared to go to the hospital fearing for their lives. Police in Maldives is known for their brutality and barbarism.

Qasim's condition is extremely serious and he is now under observation in IGMH hospital. Police wanted to take him to the station with the machines so that they can better isolate him but DO can confirm that the doctors intervened and requested that he be allowed to be in the hospital under observation. Reports are coming that people are going to the hospital now. He is in Room number 2.

Qasim Ibrahim suffers from acute allergy to dust and falls in when he has to inhale polluted and dusty air. Furthermore, Bronchoconstriction can also be triggered by emotional upsets. He underwent major surgery in Germany about a year ago. Gayyoom is very much aware of this but still continues to keep him in detention.

Mr. Qasim is one of the most generous and respected figures in Maldives. He is also a members of the Special Majlis.

ADK Owner Nashid was arrested today

Confirmed reports say that ADK Hospital’s owner, Mr. Nashid was taken to the police today. His office and house were searched and police took things such as computer and mobile phone, which have been confiscated.
He was questioned about whether he went to the 12/13th August demonstration and whether or not he funded Ahmed Athif, Male’ member for the constitutional assembly, who is a senior staff at ADK Hospital in Male'.
Mr. Nashid is a close associate of Qasim Ibrahim and a moderate person. He was taken to police two years ago for trying to become members of Amnesty International. In that incident he was detained for a few days along with Qasim Ibrahim and Hassan Zahir (Rado). Mr. Nashid is a noted person and many believe that Dhivehi Observer is funded by him, as DO Editor in Chief was a former board member of Horizon Fisheries Private Limited in Maldives of which Mr. Nashid is the Chairman.

kaafuatollibrahishareefSpecial Majlis Member Ibrahim Shareef Arrested today

Another reformist MP who walked out of the first session of the constitutional assembly on 19th July 2004 was arrested today bringing the number of MPs in custody to 12. This is further indication that Gayyoom is completely paranoid with opposition MPs and reformists in general. He cannot stand criticism at all. Hon. Ibrahim Shareef is the Special Majlis Member for Male' Atoll and a popular journalist.

Mr. Adnan of ThabahGe arrested today

Adnan has been taken into custody. He had been in an island since the Black Friday incident and came back to Male’ today. He was a vocal protestor on Black Friday demonstration and spoke to the crown with the megaphone. A crime most probably will be punishable by death or stoning.

Evan Naseem was killed by Gayyom's police on 19th Sept. 2003. More killing followed the next day when riots broke out in Maafushi jail.

 BREAKING NEWS

Protest in Maafushi Jail

Reports of fire and jail breakout was confirmed by a prison official last night. Protests were held in Maafushi prison to remember the the brutal murder of Evan Naseem the same day last year. Dozens of police in riot gear beat up several inmates and quelled the protest. There are reports that a number of inmates are seriously injured, some with broken limbs. The Police is refusing to bring them to Male' for treatment fearing that things may go out of control like last year. They are being kept on separate blocks now. Information Minister Ibrahim Manik (Samarey) to be transferred to Youth Ministry

It is reported from a reliable source closed to Ibrahim Manik that he will be transferred to Youth Ministry soon. He is to be transferred to Youth Ministry. This shuffle is the second change in Gayyoom's government in so many days.

As reported earlier this month, Gayyoom's mighty brother Hameed, The Speaker of the Majlis and the Atolls Minister is in fact being given the golden handshake as the public appears to be resentful of Hameed then any other official in the government. Rumours like these have been in the air for some days now and perhaps this is the final call.

Police and NSS personnel in detention

Male', 8 September 2004 - Informants in National Security Service and the Defence Ministry say that a number of their own personnel are also in detention now. Most of them are associates of pro reformists and openly expressed their support for the pro democracy movement.

Two weeks back Mr. Shimhad Anees of Moonlight Villa, Ga. Dhevvadhoo was arrested because he wrote a letter to Hon. Qasim Ibrahim supporting Mr. Qasim's hard work to bring more democracy to the Maldives.

Local pundits say that Gayyoom is absolutely paranoid and wants to ensure that all the reformists are taught a lesson this time around. Also, it is envisaged that he will be keeping the reformists in custody for as long as he can. The earliest any of the key members will be released is by middle of November by then the new Legislative Assembly (Citizens' Majlis) will be elected. Gayyoom and his government know the popular support for reformist members in the islands. Most of the potential candidates of the reform movement are now behind bars and Gayyoom can now easily elect people who are on his side. We have confirmed reports from major islands such as Thinadhoo, Fuah Mulah and Hithadhoo, that Gayyoom's government candidates are already campaigning for the upcoming elections. Government is in fact sponsoring trips by these hardcore supporters of the regime, some of who are in fact members of the cabinet.

Gayyoom freezes the bank accounts of Black Friday detainees

Male', 8 Sept. 2004 - Confirmed reports say that Gayyoom has instructed the banks in Maldives to freeze the accounts of the detainees of the Black Friday, 13th August 2004. Instructions are given to Bank of Maldives, Bank of Ceylon, State Bank of India and HSBC Bank. Sources in the banks have confirmed that they have been sent a long list of the names of the detainees such as the honourable members of the Constitutional Assembly, Mr. Qasim Ibrahim, Dr. Munavvaru and Mr. I. H. Zaki amongst others. Furthermore, no payment can be processed from these accounts accept with the approval of the authorities. Wire transfers to overseas accounts will also be monitored and details of the payees must be disclosed to the authorities. Gayyoom is hoping that this action will lead to the dissidents of the Maldives who are living abroad to stop their activities and operations due to shortage of funds.

Qasim, Dr. Munavvar and Zaki transferred to Feydhoo Finolhu Island today

Male’, 7 Sept. 2004, unconfirmed reports say that Honourable members of the constitutional assembly Mr. Qasim Ibrahim, Dr. Munvvaru and Mr. Ibrahim Hussain Zaki have been transferred today to Feydhoo Finolhu. This cannot be independently verified. Reports say that Gayyoom has no intention of releasing any of the key reformists. Some family members are allowed to go and visit the detainees but only those who have friends in the higher ranks of the police.

Death of an 18 year old trainee under suspicious circumstance at Girifushi Training Camp

Male', 7 Sept. 2004, A young 18 year old boy died today at Girifushi Island, military training island cum detention centre. A Rasheed who died today is from the island of Fuahmulaku. Cause of death is reported to be drowning during training. However, the informant says that this was an attempt to eliminate this young private as he was leaking information about the detainees of Black Friday, 13th August 2004. Several detainees are still kept there and this boy saw all the horrible activities of Black Friday and these to many in Male'. There can only be speculations on these issues. Gayyoom’s regime does not attache much important to human life, post-mortems and pathology reports are not compulsory. Public inquiries are not allowed in the Maldives and under very special circumstances one can have a Presidential Inquiry, finding of these inquiries are published after Gayyoom censors it in the name of national security.

This news was kept from the public today and mobile SMS service was not available today to stop the news from spreading.
