NSS still abusing authority
By Mariyam Mohamed - Tuesday, 24th August 2004
The people of Maldives are now living their lives in fear an unease as the government is getting back at them for the disgrace the government has brought on itself from the outside world.
Everyone in Malé, the capital fears the sheer thought of police as they had made life hard for everyone as curfews are being implemented, all are questioned, people being misjudged for there appearance and arrested.
Even today traffic Police held up a couple at noon saying that it is against the law to drive with the head light on. Is it true?... no! The traffic law book does state that all vehicles should put the headlight or bicycle lamp at 0600pm to 0600am, but nothing states that a light should be put off. What's the reason they stopped the couple? Cause they can. Why? To harass, cause that civilian is enjoying his drive. That civilian did have a cause to drive with headlight on too, he was driving a motorcycle which does not have headlight off switch which is very common nowadays as the motorcycles which are now sold from Brothers Motor Company (Sheesha) does not have the switch.
The Police are letting their anger and frustrations that gets held up inside them in their military training loose on innocent civilians as they are being given pep talks by their officers saying their brothers were stabbed with sharp knives. But the truth is hidden as even the man behind the stabbing of the police officer confessed, said he was paid. He was paid by one of them! A devious trick and an excuse to do a lot of thing they wanted to do.
