Bangali Prince Shuaib of Maldives attempts a "hit and run"

Mariyam Mohamed, 7th July 2004

The favourite son in law of Gayyoom was yesterday caught by the public whilst trying a hit and run saga in Majeedhee Magu.  Eye witnesses reported that he was driving on the wrong side of the road and he hit a motorcycle, slightly injuring the passenger sitting in the back. The incident occurred in front of the National Library. He then ignored it and wanted to carry on entertaining some business associates who were riding with him. However, another motorcyclist intervened and stopped him and soon the public surrounded the scene. Police was there shortly trying to protect the Prince and somehow the saga ended with the two motorcyclists being taken into police, who are still reported to be in custody. So, obviously they broke the law by interference with the livelihood of the Prince.

This is typical of the law and order in Maldives, where the Gayyoom’s family and friends are somehow way above the law.

Mr. Shuaib Shah is originally from Bangladesh but is a British National. He is married to the eldest daughter of Gayyoom and is extremely powerful. He lives in the Presidential Palace and drives his private registered 2121 car courtesy of the Maldives treasury, which is obviously his father in law’s personal account. "Prince" Shuaib is a well educated Barrister who trained in the United Kingdom and went over to live in Maldives after marrying into the Maldives 'royal' family. His law firm Shah, Hussain & Co. is more powerful than the Justice Ministry and most Maldivian businessman appoint his firm to represent them in high profile cases. Prince Shuaib is able to cut underhand deals with Gayyoom, his Father in Law and wins all the cases.

The motorcyclists are still in police custody

The public is obviously outraged by the disregard shown by Gayyoom’s family to the rule of law.  Most such incidents go unreported in the Maldives because of the media being strictly under the control of Gayyoom’s illegitimate government.

Reports also are coming that the self proclaimed Royal elites of Maldives are extremely agitated and upset because the public is no longer afraid of them and are able to confront them.

DO would like to note that this is a new era in Maldives and although this website is blocked by the Gayyoom, it is now a front runner in informing the public about the incidents that go unreported in the local press and media.
