Gayyoom scared to leave Male' - 5th day of the worst disaster in living memory still Gayyoom has not visited a single island

'What kind of a leader is Gayyoom?' is what everyone in Maldives is asking. Surely, he must have seen the devastation and the destruction in so many islands of the Maldives yet he has still not visited a single island to date. Sources close to the self proclaimed King say that Gayyoom is paranoid about a potential demonstration in Male' if he leaves the main island and also he is scared to travel by sea or even by air.

Under pressure from international community to show a more hands on approach to the relief program, it is believed that Gayyoom is now preparing to tour some islands that were affected by Tsunami waves. Gayyoom's multimillion dollar yacht Arumaazu and his security is now on standby to begin touring the country from tomorrow morning. However, it all depends on astrological reading said a close associate of the dictator.

"This is the 5th day and I have no news of my family in Laamu Atoll Mundoo" said a worried Maldivian student in Australia

A Maldivian student in Australia has written to DO expressing his utter disgust over the fact that the Maldivan Authority - Disaster Task Force - have to this day not provided him with the fate of his family members, Mother, Father, Brothers and Sisters and other close members of the family as well.  read more

Fresh tsunami alert across India's coastal areas
A fresh tsunami alert has been sounded across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Lakshwadeep, Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman Nicobar Islands today. An emergency Cabinet meeting was called in New Delhi after a warning was received from international sources on the Pacific rim. read more

Indian Ocean tsunami - lessons for governments and the tourism industry

It took more than four hours for the wave to hit Sri Lanka, but what use was made of that time? Why did I hear nothing on my television set? Why did the local police and hotel managers not know what was happening? If they did know, what were they doing about it? What were the military doing in those four hours? Is it possible that everyone was caught napping because it was Christmas? Is there any truth in rumours that warnings were suppressed in some countries for fear of damaging the tourist industry? The tourist industry of the region has certainly been damaged now, and it will not recover until visitors can be confident that adequate systems exist to protect them.

Helping Traumatized Children: A Brief Overview for Caregivers
Listen to the child, answer questions, provide comfort and support. We often have no adequate explanations about senseless death or traumatic events. It is just fine to tell children that you do not know why something happened or that you get confused and upset by it, too. In the end, listening and comforting a child without avoiding or over-reacting will have long-lasting positive effects on the child's ability to cope with trauma.

Reconstruction in Male' underway while people starve and die in the islands across the country

Gayyoom fails to prioritise his agenda. The reconstruction of Male' appears to be more important than saving the lives of the thousands of destitute people scattered in more than 200 islands.

These pictures show that the reconstruction of Male' is underway whilst there are many islands in the Maldives which have still not been even visited by the authorities. view more

Comparative Imagery of Male IAP, pre- and post-tsunami
 Indian Ocean Tsunami Imagery
Male International Airport - Republic of Maldives
Republic of Maldives includes some 1,200 coral islands grouped in double chain of twenty-seven atolls. In many ways, the Maldives are the archetype of the sunny coral atoll. Most atolls are ringshaped coral reefs supporting five to ten inhabited islands and twenty to sixty uninhabited islands. Average size of islands one to two kilometers and height of 1.5 meters above sea level. Composed of live coral reefs and sand bars, these atolls are situated atop a submarine ridge 960 kilometers long that rises abruptly from the depths of the Indian Ocean and runs from north to south. Only near the southern end of this natural coral barricade do two open passages permit safe ship navigation from one side of the Indian Ocean to the other through the territorial waters of Maldives.

Does anybody have any news of Lynn, Keith & their son Daniel Gilliam from Basildon Essex? They were on holiday in the Maldives over Christmas. We had our honeymoon on the Maldives aboard the Atoll Explorer from which we took diving courses and thereafter at the wonderful Laguna Beach. We WILL be back to support the tourism industry and once again visit this special part of the world full of special people.

THE DREAM

By the strength of our common endeavour, to achieve what we cannot do alone, to grant each of us the power to realize our full potential, and the means to create for this and future generations a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the respect we receive reflect the duties we owe, so that freed from the tyranny of poverty, ignorance and fear, we could live together in spirit of solidarity tolerance and respect.
