51 dead and 70 missing in Maldives

Three islands are unaffected by tsunami:
Neykurndhoo island in Haa Dhaalu atoll;
Maamigili island in Ari atoll south; and
Dhevvadhoo island in north Huvadhu atoll.

Serious damage - 37 islands.
Reasonable damage - 78 islands.
No damage (ineffectual flooding) - 41 islands.

People transferred from 13 islands.

Business operations ceased in 20 resorts (1658 beds). Some of these are: Olhuveli, Kandoomaa, Dhonveli, One and Only Kanuhuraa, Medhafushi, and Hakuraa Huraa. These resorts are badly damaged and will take two or three months to be repaired. Other resorts will be operational within a few weeks.

Tourists were evacuated from 8 resorts. These are: Hakuraa Huraa, Olhuveli, One and Only Kanuhuraa, Kandoomaa, Fun Island, Medhafushi, Velaavaru, and Dhonveli.
Two resorts requested to have tourists evacuated - Kihadhuffaru and White Sands.

Currently there are 17,000 tourists in Maldives.
Three tourists have been killed, one is a woman.
Hakuraa Huraa manager was killed. He was a citizen of Sri Lanka.

540 displaced people in makeshift accommodation in Majeediyaa School building.

Last night at 10.30 pm Male' time, NSS coastguard left for Meemu atoll with food, clothing and materials for burials. There are 14 people dead in Meemu atoll in need of burial.

The National Security Service (NSS) is complaining that some election candidates are taking inappropriate advantage of the situation by identifying the food and clothing aid send to people in devastated islands as having come from a certain people. NSS warned candidates not to do this.
Appearing on TV Maldives, the Deputy commissioner of police Ibrahim Latheef said that he has noticed that some people taking inappropriate advantage of the situation and it should not be done. The aid is from all, and it should not be identified as coming from just some people. Aid must not be taken in the name of particular people, he said.
